The Dangers of Overseas Surgery

Why pay more? Combine that overseas holiday with the procedure you've always wanted and no one will ever suspect you had a little work done?

This is the dream being sold to so many unsuspecting Australians. Being told to fly overseas, have cosmetic surgery, save lots of money and enjoy a holiday as well. Unfortunately for many, this dream often turns into a nightmare.

There are countless tales of hapless Aussies who venture abroad to have surgery only to return in tears. There are so many risks involved with this that it baffles the mind as to why people still consider it a viable option.

Here are the 5 main reasons that you should reconsider having cosmetic surgery overseas.

Hygiene: Cleanliness standards are not uniform the world over. Walking down the street in many developing nations will make this abundantly clear. If you can't drink the water somewhere, do you want to visit a hospital there?

Medical Standards: Australia has some of the highest standards of training for surgeons in the world. It requires years of study followed by copious amounts of clinical placements. Do you know what the Thai or Costa Rican standards are for surgical training?

Surgical Assurance: You are safely back home and you notice that your procedure hasn't turned out exactly how you wanted . It's a shame that your doctor is now thousands of kilometres away. If you have surgery in Australia, your doctor will be there to help if you have any questions or issues. Are you willing to fly to back to Bangkok if something goes wrong?

Communication: If you have ever been overseas before, it will come as no shock to you that communication can be a problem. You're sitting in a restaurant and you have to point and mime what you want to eat. Are you going to feel comfortable pointing and miming to someone who is about to use a scalpel on you?

Goodbye Insurance. As a result of the high level of risk involved with overseas surgery, most insurance companies will not cover those types of procedures. Your bargain nose job might end up costing you a lot more. Is it worth the risk?

Many people are swayed because of the low prices, but don't let your wallet dictate your actions. You should never sacrifice your health and wellbeing for the sake of saving a little money. You are worth so much more than that.
