What to expect after liposuction
Liposuction has long been heralded as a fast and easy way to address ‘problem areas’ around the body that persist despite a healthy diet and regular exercise. But before you consider undergoing liposuction, it’s important you have a realistic understanding of what you can expect following the procedure.
How liposuction is performed
Liposuction works by making small incisions in inconspicuous locations on the skin, before inserting a small suction tube known as a cannula. Stubborn fat cells are then removed from the problem area, thereby achieving a more pleasing and proportionate shape.
Typically performed under either local or general anaesthetic, the procedure can target a range of areas of the body including the abdomen, waist, back, hips, legs, inner and outer thighs, calves, ankles, upper arms, face, mons pubis and male chest (man boobs), achieving immediate results.
Immediately following liposuction
Immediately following liposuction, it is common for patients to notice some bruising and swelling, and to experience discomfort similar to what you might feel after a strenuous gym work-out.
The recovery period following liposuction depends on the area involved, most patients able to return to non-strenuous work within seven days. In some cases where extensive liposuction is performed the recovery period may be longer. Generally, any swelling and tenderness will also disappear in the first week or two following the procedure.
We also usually recommend that patients avoid attempting more intense activities like gym work-outs, competitive sports or heavy physical work for at least ten days following liposuction. To aid recovery and achieve optimum results, we also recommend patients wear compression garments for four to six weeks after a liposuction procedure.
Expected results from liposuction
The overall result you can expect to achieve from liposuction will vary according to the individual and the area being treated.
Because the volume or weight of the fat removed is not as important as the improvement in the body’s contour, the effectiveness of liposuction is better measured by the reduction in centimetres or inches, rather than in kilograms or pounds.

Long-term results of liposuction
The great news about liposuction is that the removed fat cells never return.
The fat under our skin contains millions of microscopic individual fat cells which are only produced in the foetus and at the onset of puberty. After puberty, it’s highly unlikely the body would produce any new fat cells.
What this means is that once fat cells are removed through liposuction, they are removed permanently. Having said that, weight gain is still possible after liposuction as any remaining fat cells in the body can continue to expand, meaning maintaining a healthy diet and exercise is still important.
