What’s the difference between Labiaplasty and Vaginoplasty?

March 19, 2018

While it is often considered a sensitive topic, many women go on living with a range of issues ‘down there’ simply because they don’t know enough about the treatment options available to them. Whether be it a large or irregular labia, lax vaginal muscles, tissues or another issue, there are a range of treatment options available which can address any concerns you have, allowing you to focus on other things.

If you’re considering undergoing vaginal enhancement surgery, you may be unsure which treatment option is best for you. While labiaplasty and vaginoplasty surgery are quite possibly the most well-known vaginal enhancement procedures, they are designed to treat different issues. Let’s take a look at the key differences between the two procedures to work out which one may be more suitable for your needs.

What is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty (also commonly referred to as Labioplasty, Labia Reduction, Inner Lip Reduction or Labia Minora Reduction) is a procedure that is designed to reduce the size or change the shape of the labia minora (the small lips on the outside of the vagina).

It can be a suitable treatment option for women with a large or irregular labia minora who could be experiencing discomfort or irritation when wearing tight clothing, playing sport or during intercourse. Some patients also opt for a labiaplasty purely for aesthetic reasons.

During a labiaplasty procedure, some small incisions are made to reduce or reshape the labia minora and remove any excess tissue. The area is then repaired using dissolvable stitches. Because the clitoris remains unaffected by the procedure, it shouldn’t result in any loss of sexual sensation.

What is Vaginoplasty?

In contrast, vaginoplasty (also known as Vaginal Tightening, Vaginal Rejuvenation, Cosmetic Vaginal Surgery, Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation or Aesthetic Vaginal Surgery) is a procedure designed to tighten the lax muscles and tissues in the front or back of the vaginal canal. This can occur following childbirth, because of genetics, as a result of trauma, or simply from the vaginal tissue stretching.

The procedure results in a tighter vaginal opening and canal, with many patients reporting a heightened level of satisfaction during sex following the procedure.

A vaginoplasty works by making some small incisions in the skin surrounding the vagina before adding some strong sutures to tighten the muscles and tissues inside the vaginal canal. The sutures work by pulling the separated muscles together, creating a much smaller and tighter opening and canal.

What to expect following a labiaplasty or vaginoplasty

The recovery period following a labiaplasty or vaginoplasty surgery are quite similar.

It’s likely you’ll feel drowsy from the anaesthetic and you can expect to experience some pain and discomfort in the first few days following the surgery, which is usually easily managed with pain relieving medication. You can generally return to doing light activities the day after the procedure, but should avoid having sexual intercourse for at least 45 days to ensure a full recovery.

What are the other options?

If after finding out more about labiaplasty and vaginoplasty you’ve realised neither procedure is going to be suitable for you, there are several other vaginal enhancement options you could consider.

Clitoral Hood Reduction(also known as a Hoodectomy)can be a good solution if you have excess skin over the clitoris. It can result in a smoother and tighter clitoral hood and would generally also increase sensation during sex.

If you’re unhappy with the uneven skin or colour on your clitoral hood, labia or perineum, Vaginal Laser Resurfacing could be a suitable way to resurface, smooth or tighten problem areas.

G-spot Enhancement and Amplification Surgery is another procedure which can improve sexual satisfaction by enlarging the highly erogenous area just inside the vaginal opening, making the area more conducive to pressure during sex.

Some women may also want to have their hymen re-instated for social, cultural or religious reasons. In this case Hymen Repair Surgery can be performed to reconstruct the hymen by bringing the hymenal ring membranes back together.

If desired, most vaginal enhancement procedures can also be combined with other procedures to achieve the desired result or create the ultimate ‘designer vagina’.
