How can I get my ears pinned back?
If you have large or protruding ears, cosmetic ear surgery, commonly referred to as ear pinning, ear reduction or Otoplasty surgery, can be an effective way to achieve a balanced and more symmetrical appearance.
While patients seeking ‘ear pinning’ are usually looking to position prominent ears closer to the head, cosmetic ear surgery is also commonly performed to reduce the overall size or shape of the ear.
If you’re thinking of undergoing an Otoplasty procedure and want to find out more, here’s an overview of what you can expect.
How it works
During an Otoplasty or ear pinning procedure, an incision is made in the fold of skin behind the ear and any excess cartilage is removed to minimise the protrusion. In some cases, it may be more appropriate to remodel the cartilage by folding it and stitching it into place rather than removing it.
Generally performed under local anaesthetic with light sedation, the procedure itself can be performed in a relatively short period of time, usually around one to two hours depending on the complexity.
Immediately after the procedure the ears are bandaged for protection, and it’s not uncommon to experience some bruising and swelling around the area which usually subsides in a few weeks.
To help aid the recovery and protect the ears following the surgery, a headband needs to be worn continuously for between one to two weeks after the procedure, then only at night for an additional four to eight weeks.
Most patients recognise a very noticeable yet natural-looking improvement in the protrusion of their ears following an Otoplasty procedure, enjoying a more balanced and symmetrical overall appearance.
While the procedure can be very effective at reducing ear protrusion, because no single person has two identical ears you shouldn’t expect to achieve perfect symmetry. Ear cartilage is also very elastic so it’s likely that there could be some forward movement of the ears following the procedure.
In most cases, the procedure will leave a faint scar on the back of the ear, however this usually fades.
