Will I still look like me if I get fillers?

August 07, 2018

Dermal fillers are a great way to restore volume to the face, treat the appearance of facial lines and improve the skin’s overall quality, however time and time again we hear the same question from patients considering dermal filler treatments—will I still look like me?

Because some fillers work by adding volume to the treatment areas, it’s no surprise that this is a common concern. If you, like so many of our other patients, want to know more about the range of filler treatment options and the results you can expect to achieve, read on to find out more about what you can expect when you opt for a filler treatment.

Types of filler treatments

The first thing you need to know when considering dermal fillers is that there are a range of treatment options including lip, facial and skin boosting dermal fillers which are designed to treat various conditions.

If you want to accentuate the lip line, create a more defined cupids’ bow (the double curve of the upper lip) or create fuller, more luscious lips, lip fillers are an ideal treatment option.

If you’re looking for a way to restore a more youthful appearance, facial fillers are also a very effective treatment option that works by adding volume to areas of the face such as the cheeks, brow or chin. Facial fillers can even be used as a non-surgical method to correct minor defects in the shape of the nose.

Skin boosting dermal fillers are also another treatment option which is commonly used on the face, neck, hands and décolletage to improve the skin’s overall quality by boosting hydration levels deep within the skin to improve the skin’s texture and clarity.

If you’re looking for a more natural alternative to dermal fillers, Autologous Fat Transplantation is another treatment option that can achieve similar results to lip and facial fillers that works by extracting fat from another area of your body by liposuction, before reinjecting it into the face and cheeks. This treatment provides an effective, non-allergenic way to recontour your face and provide definition to your jowls and chin and can even be used to correct some facial deformities.

How fillers work

As a popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment, lip and facial fillers work by injecting small amounts of filler into the treatment areas, which then bind with the water in your skin to rejuvenate, reshape and boost the natural volume of skin. The filler enhances the natural contours of the face and reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles to provide an overall more youthful appearance.

In contrast, skin boosting dermal fillers work by injecting small amounts of hyaluronic (water loving) fillers in the dermis which work to deeply hydrate the skin and create stronger, healthier looking skin. Unlike lip and facial fillers, skin boosting fillers do not alter the shape of the face.

How to achieve a natural-looking result

While lip and facial fillers can alter the shape of the face, if you take our advice, there’s no need to be concerned about the risk of an unnatural or fake-looking result.

The most important thing you can do to protect yourself from the risk of a ‘bad filler job’ is select a reputable clinic and highly experienced physician to perform the treatment. Nothing compares to experience, and by selecting a physician with a demonstrated history of producing excellent results for their patients, you’ll know you’re in good hands.

In the case you choose an inexperienced physician and end up with a sub-par result, don’t despair—because most filler treatments generally last between six months and two years, the results of your botched treatment (while still very dissatisfying) won’t be permanent.

In addition, most dermal fillers can be dissolved to reverse the treatment. Please talk to your physician if you have any concerns.

When selecting a physician, ensure they recommend a suitable treatment plan which will ensure your treatment is provided gradually to avoid sudden changes to your appearance. This will ensure your looks are enhanced subtly and elegantly so you can continuously look your best.
