Your Summer Survival Guide

your summer survival guide

In Australia, we’re lucky enough to be able to enjoy each of the four seasons. While there are plenty of things to enjoy as the climate starts to shift, these seasonal changes can also have a significant impact on our skin, face and body—with summer often proving to be the season that takes the greatest toll.

With the hot summer months just around the corner, we’ve pulled together some of our top tips in this summer survival guide to help you embrace the season, and to protect, revitalise and restore your skin, face and body so you know you’ll look your best.

Skin

The number one rule during the summer months is to watch your sun exposure.

While moderate sun exposure can be beneficial as it promotes the production of Vitamin D (an essential hormone needed for strong bones, muscles and good overall health), spending more than a few minutes in the sun could be harmful. Overexposure to Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation can result in sunburn, eye damage, photosensitivity, premature ageing and potentially fatal skin cancer.

To reduce the risk of overexposure, SunSmart recommend you:

  • try to cover as much skin as possible with protective clothing
  • regularly apply 30SPF (or higher) broad-spectrum sunscreen
  • wear a hat that provides good shade for your face, head, neck and ears
  • wear protective sunglasses that meet Australian Standards (AS/NZS1067:2003), and
  • stay in the shade as much as possible.

It’s also important to get a regular skin check to inspect any suspect moles. ME Clinic provides mole removal treatments where any potentially harmful moles can be removed using a simple, quick and painless process.

In addition to protecting your skin from harmful UV radiation, you can also give your skin the boost it needs to get through the summer months with topical retin-A treatments. Using Tretinoin as the active ingredient, these treatments promote the production of collagen in the skin and increases cell multiplication, causing the skin to grow more rapidly to slow down and even reverse the skin’s ageing process.

Body

The summer season is party season, filled with fun, festivities and feasting.

While there’s no better time of year to let your hair down and enjoy some of the finer pleasures of life, the key to surviving the season without unwanted extra kilos is to indulge, but in moderation. You should absolutely enjoy a few glasses of wine and tuck into the turkey or seafood lunch on Christmas day—just remember not to go overboard.

If you do happen to consume a few more calories than you planned to, balance it out by increasing your exercise. Try things like going for a walk after a long lunch, cooling off with a few laps at your local swimming pool, or adding an extra gym session to your weekly workout schedule.

If you find you’ve gained a few extra kilos over the summer season that refuse to shift, you could consider liposuction treatment as a solution to help get you back into shape. Liposuction can be a great way to target hard-to-shift fatty deposits on almost any area of the body.

Face

When it comes to age, no area of the body is more telling than the face. Over summer, the combination of increased sun exposure and seasonal festivities which often lead to higher consumption of alcohol and fatty foods can leave your face looking a little worse for wear.

A cosmetic skin peel is a great way to give your skin a much needed post summer pick-me-up. Following months of increased sun exposure, it’s likely you’ll have a build-up of dead skin cells on the surface of your skin. A cosmetic skin peel helps rejuvenate your skin by removing those layers of dead skin cells and stimulating the production of new cells, resulting in a more youthful appearance.

Once you’ve undone the damage, you should also consider ways to slow the facial ageing process. Anti-wrinkle injections are a popular treatment option which can help relax the facial muscles that cause lines and wrinkles to appear, resulting in smoother skin that is less prone to wrinkling and furrowing.
