What to expect before, during and after Liposuction

If you’re looking for a fast and effective way to eliminate stubborn fat deposits on your tummy, hips, thighs or another area of the body, liposuction is a wonder treatment that thousands of Australians turn to every year to improve their physique.

Like undergoing any procedure for the first time, you may feel hesitant about having liposuction if you’re not sure what to expect. To help put your nerves at ease, here’s an overview of what you can expect before, during and after liposuction treatment at Me Clinic.

If you’re considering liposuction, the first step is to book a consultation with one of our highly experienced surgeons. While there is a wealth of information out there about liposuction, nothing can compare to receiving first-hand, personalised advice based on an assessment of your individual needs.

During your consultation, your surgeon will want to discuss your areas of concern, conduct a general medical consult and take the time to talk through the various options and likely outcomes.

Depending on their assessment of your personal needs and requirements, in most cases your surgeon will recommend one of the following liposuction treatments:

  • Tumescent Liposuction: This is the most common liposuction technique we perform at Me Clinic which involves the delicate extraction of fat cells using a suction device.
  • Ultrasound Liposuction: Combines tumescent liposuction with the use of an ultrasound device which melts pockets of fat in the treatment area, making them easier to extract.
  • Laser Lipolysis: A non-invasive procedure that uses fibre-optic lasers to melt body fat without requiring vacuum suction, also triggering the production of collagen to firm and tighten the skin.
  • Power Assisted Liposuction: A similar technique to tumescent liposuction that uses a very small cannula which produces rapid vibrations to break up fat cells, allowing them to be delicately extracted.
  • Mega Liposuction: A treatment for significantly overweight patients who require a large volume of fat to be removed.

Each liposuction technique can produce different results and it’s crucial that you develop a realistic understanding of what’s achievable. Your surgeon will be able to discuss this with you at length during your consultation to ensure you select the most appropriate liposuction treatment to suit your needs and expectations.

During your consultation, we will also provide an all-inclusive quote for treatment and if you would like to proceed, schedule a time for your liposuction procedure.

It’s not uncommon for patients to feel nervous or apprehensive about their liposuction procedure, but when you undergo liposuction at Me Clinic, we’ll make every effort to make you feel as relaxed and comfortable as possible.

While everyone’s experience may be slightly different, the liposuction treatment method used will largely dictate what your overall experience will be like.

If you’re undergoing a non-invasive procedure like laser lipolysis, the procedure is painless and can be performed without requiring anaesthesia, however, liposuction procedures are generally performed under either local or general anaesthetic.

If the procedure can be conducted using local anaesthetic, it would typically be performed as a day procedure in-clinic without requiring a hospital admission. While you would not be sedated, the treatment area would be completely numbed so you won’t feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure. Adrenaline is also added to reduce blood loss and increase the anaesthetic effect.

In the case where the procedure will require the removal of a significant volume of fat or will be performed on multiple areas of the body, it may be more suitable to use a general anaesthetic. Where this is the case, the procedure will be performed in a hospital with the services of a qualified Anaesthetist. As you are entirely sedated while under general anaesthetic, the procedure will be completely painless.

The recovery, following a liposuction procedure, will vary from patient to patient.

Liposuction is a safe procedure performed on thousands of patients every year, but as with any procedure, it is common for patients to experience some side-effects following the procedure.

Immediately following the procedure it’s common to experience some numbness in the treatment area. If your procedure was performed under general anaesthetic, it’s likely you will feel drowsy from the anaesthetic, so you should arrange for someone to take you home after the procedure.

During the recovery period, you may notice some bruising and swelling around the treatment area. You may also feel some discomfort similar to that following a strenuous work-out. These symptoms usually subside completely within a week or two.

Many patients are surprised at how quickly they recover following the procedure and most patients can comfortably return to non-strenuous work two or three days after the procedure, but we do recommend you avoid more strenuous activities for at least 10 days.

To achieve optimal results and get you back in tip-top shape as quickly as possible, we also recommend patients wear compression garments for several weeks following treatment. These will help to maintain good blood circulation to help tissue heal quickly and minimise the risk of forming a blood clot.

At Me Clinic, we pride ourselves on our quality patient after-care program. As part of your treatment, we will conduct several post-procedure visits throughout your recovery to examine the treatment area and attend to any issues as required. If you have any questions or concerns, we’ll also provide you with our after-hours contact number so you can reach us at any time if required.

Once you’ve made a full recovery, you’ll be able to see the final result of your treatment. As the procedure can be performed by making only very small incisions in inconspicuous locations on the skin, it’s unlikely you’ll notice any significant scarring. The removal of fat cells is also essentially permanent, so you’ll be able to enjoy the benefits of the procedure for a lifetime!
