Tried-and-tested ways to treat droopy eyes

treat droopy eyes

As a result of years of sun exposure and the gradual loss of elasticity, this thin and delicate skin can become lax and begin to sag and lengthen. This can cause the excess skin on the eyelid to fold or create a hooded look that can dramatically age your face. If you’d like to know how to treat saggy or droopy eyes, here are three tried-and-tested treatments that can breathe new life into tired looking eyes.

The effects of ageing are most prominent on facial skin—and particularly around the eyes.

Anti-ageing injections

While anti-ageing facial injections are typically used to treat lines and wrinkles, many people don’t realise they can also be used as a non-surgical eyebrow lift.

The orbicularis oculi muscle (the muscle that closes the eyelids) is one of the key muscles that pull the eyebrows down, causing the eye to droop. By carefully targeting these muscles with anti-ageing injections, we can relax the muscle and relieve the downward pressure, allowing the forehead muscles to lift the brow unhindered. In most cases, the treatment can cause the eyebrow to lift several millimetres.

This method will also prevent the eye from drooping further, slowing the ageing process. Anti-ageing injections can also be highly effective at treating facial lines and wrinkles including crows feet, frown and forehead lines, which you may want to consider combining with a brow lift treatment.

Treatment with anti-ageing injections is safe and effective and only takes around 10 minutes. You can expect to feel a “pin prick” sensation during treatment and you can usually see results in three days, however, it can take up to 7-10 days to realise the full effect.

While results can vary between patients, treatment will usually last from 3 to 6 months, but it tends to last longer (up to 12 months) after you’ve completed your first few treatments. We usually recommend a treatment plan to keep you looking your best at all times.

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are another non-surgical solution to treat sagging or droopy eyes.

While the treatment follows the same process as anti-ageing injections, the two treatments work in an opposite manner—while anti-wrinkle injections work to treat and prevent sagging skin by relaxing targeted muscles, dermal fillers work by increasing volume in strategically selected locations to pad out sunken areas and hold the skin taut.

By injecting small amounts of filler to increase volume underneath the eyebrow, it will provide better support to elevate the brow and pull the loose or sagging eyelid taut.

Also commonly used to provide extra volume and fill out deeper crevices on the lips, cheeks, mouth and smile lines, chin, jowls, crows feet, frown, furrow and forehead lines, you could choose to treat multiple areas in a single treatment to achieve an overall more youthful appearance.

Dermal filler treatments will usually last between 6 and 9 months before gradually fading away—similar to anti-wrinkle injections, the results may last longer (over 12 months in some cases) following several treatments.

Eyelid surgery

Where the extent of the eye sagging is more significant, eyelid surgery (or upper blepharoplasty) may be a more suitable treatment option.

A highly effective procedure to eliminate sagging or drooping skin, the procedure works to open and refresh the eye by removing the hood of excess skin from the upper eyelid either by laser or through conventional surgery. During the procedure, fat can also be removed or repositioned and the skin tightened to produce the best result.

If you also suffer from bags underneath the lower eyelid, upper eyelid surgery can also be combined with a lower blepharoplasty procedure to achieve the optimal outcome with no additional recovery time required.

Eyelid surgery is usually performed under general anaesthetic making the procedure entirely painless and your skin should heal completely within 2 to 3 weeks. When performed using laser, you can also achieve an essentially scarless result as the imperceptible scar is buried in the crease of the eyelid.
