tips for first time cosmetic surgery

Doing anything for the first time can seem a little intimidating if you are not sure what to expect - and the same goes for cosmetic surgery.

If you are new to the world of cosmetic surgery and are considering having your first cosmetic procedure, there are a few things you can do to ensure you achieve the best possible result and make the experience a positive one.

Here are our top tips if you are considering having cosmetic surgery for the first time.

Be realistic about what’s possible

Having realistic expectations about what is achievable is of supreme importance when considering any type of cosmetic procedure. If you attempt to make sudden or dramatic changes to your physical appearance, it’s more likely that you won’t be happy with the final result.

While your surgeon may be extremely skilled and talented at what they do, they’re not magicians. A good surgeon knows how to work with the limitations of your individual features or physique to ensure changes are subtle and natural-looking.

To keep your expectations in check, it could help to look at some before and after examples of results your surgeon has been able to achieve for other patients. This way you can get an idea of how they might be able to help you before booking a one-on-one consultation with a surgeon to seek their professional opinion about what may or may not be possible.

Start before it shows

While you may think cosmetic surgery will be the only solution to achieve the result you are after, there may be a range of non-invasive treatment options you aren’t aware of, that could achieve a similar result without the need for surgery.

At Me Clinic, we always recommend non-invasive treatments first. While cosmetic surgery may be necessary, there is a good chance we will be able to either treat or slow the progression of your condition by using a range of alternative treatment options which are usually more cost-effective and require minimal or less recovery time.

The key is to act sooner rather than later - by targeting problem areas early in the piece before they have the opportunity to develop into something more significant, we may be able to either delay or negate the need for cosmetic surgery altogether.

Don’t rely on price alone

While cost is almost always an important factor when considering cosmetic surgery, you should never base your decision on price alone. Like most types of purchases, the cheapest option is rarely the best option.

The cost of a cosmetic procedure is largely dictated by factors including the skill and experience of the surgeon, the complexity of the procedure and where the procedure is being performed. While some overseas and local clinics may offer the procedure for a budget price, it’s unlikely to get you the best result.

Surgery isn’t something you want to cut corners on, so when you are choosing where to have the procedure performed, make sure you consider everything from the level of experience of the surgeon, the results they have been able to achieve for other patients and their safety and patient satisfaction record.

Prepare for your initial consultation

Before you head to your initial consultation, it is a good idea to do some research to familiarise yourself with everything from what is involved in your preferred procedure, what the expected recovery period is, any potential risks and what it’s likely to cost.

Some patients can find the volume of information when attending their first consultation a little overwhelming, so equipping yourself with a basic understanding of what the treatment is likely to involve prior to your appointment will allow you to come prepared with any questions you may have.

At Me Clinic, we want you to be fully informed about your procedure and encourage you to ask our surgeons as many questions as you like - and remember, there is no such thing as a silly question!

Don’t be afraid to shop around

It’s simple - if you don’t feel comfortable with your surgeon, we can arrange a second opinion with another surgeon at our clinic at no additional cost to you or you can seek another opinion elsewhere at your convenience.

Undergoing cosmetic surgery is a deeply personal decision that can have a very significant impact on everything from your health, appearance, self-esteem and lifestyle, so it’s integral you choose a surgeon and clinic where you feel understood and will be appropriately supported throughout your treatment.

If you are unsure about any element of your procedure or care, don’t be afraid to shop around until you find the right surgeon or clinic for you.
