Can’t decide if liposuction is a good idea?
Liposuction sounds like the perfect way to get the physique you’ve always wanted—and it can be if you’re a good candidate for the procedure. If you’re toying with the idea of having liposuction but can’t decide if it is right for you, read on to find out a bit more about what liposuction involves and who it can be suitable for to make the decision a little easier.
How to know if it’s right for you
Liposuction isn’t for everyone. While it can be an extremely fast and effective way to target unwanted fat, it is not intended as a treatment for weight loss. Instead, there are a few scenarios where it could be an ideal treatment option, such as:
- You’re healthy and active - If you lead a healthy and active lifestyle, engage in plenty of exercise and eat a nutritious diet yet find you still have stubborn fatty deposits you simply can’t shift, liposuction could be an ideal solution. These fatty deposits are usually caused by genetic factors which make it near impossible to address through exercise and diet alone. Liposuction provides a way to target problem areas and give you the physique you’ve been working so hard for.
- You want to improve your body’s contour - While you may not be overweight, you might suffer from unsightly lumps and bumps which you simply prefer weren’t there. In most cases, liposuction can be combined with liposculpture which allows for more precise extraction of fat to improve your overall contour and create a more pleasing and proportionate figure. While in many cases achieving a completely flawless physique is not realistic, in many cases liposculpture can get you very close to a perfect result.
- You want immediate and long-lasting results - Some major benefits of liposuction are that the results are immediate and long-lasting. Liposuction works by extracting unwanted fat cells from the body and the good news is that once they’re gone, they won’t come back. You should be able to notice the difference immediately, and provided you continue to lead a healthy lifestyle to avoid the expansion of any remaining fat cells, the results will be permanent.
What to expect when having liposuction
As with most cosmetic and medical procedures, a key reservation for many patients considering having liposuction is not knowing what to expect when undergoing treatment.
To answer some of your questions, here is an overview of what you can expect when having liposuction at Me Clinic.
- Initial consultation
To start the process, you’ll need to attend an initial consultation with one of our friendly and experienced surgeons. During the consultation, your surgeon will assess your condition and recommend the most suitable treatment option.
At Me Clinic, tumescent liposuction is the most commonly performed method of liposuction, however, we also offer a range of other liposuction and cosmetic procedures and will recommend the one that best meets your individual requirements.
Your consultation gives you a chance to meet with the surgeon and discuss any issues or concerns you may have. We want you to be fully informed about your procedure and there is absolutely no obligation to proceed with the procedure if you choose not to.
If following your consultation you decide that liposuction is a good option for you, we will schedule the procedure at a time that suits your work and other commitments.
- The procedure
Liposuction is usually performed as a day procedure under general anaesthetic in a hospital environment, using the services of a qualified anaesthetist. Where general anaesthetic is used, the procedure itself is entirely painless. It is likely you will feel drowsy as you recover from the anaesthetic and will need someone to drive you home following the procedure.
If your procedure can be performed without requiring a general anaesthetic, we will usually be performed in our clinic using a local anaesthetic.
- The recovery
The expected recovery is always an important factor for patients considering having liposuction.
While the recovery can vary between patients, you can expect to experience some bruising, swelling, numbness and tenderness around the treatment area. This usually disappears after two to three weeks. Patients often report some pain or discomfort similar to that of a strenuous gym workout.
You will need some down-time to rest and allow your body to heal following the procedure. Most patients are able to return to non-strenuous work after a few days, however, you should allow for up to one week if needed. You will need to wait at least 10 days before attempting more intense physical activities. Compression garments will also aid a speedy recovery and should be worn for four to six weeks following treatment.
Winter is the best time of year for liposuction
If you think liposuction might be right for you, there’s no better time of year than now. The cooler weather experienced during the winter months not only provides the perfect opportunity for you to cosy up at home while you recover, but it also provides ample time for your body to make a complete recovery before beach and bikini season is upon us. Nonetheless we perform this procedure all year round.
