thread lifts? 5 top questions answered

March 11, 2021

These days, cosmetic doctors are able to provide less invasive anti-aging and skin lifting treatments with minimal downtime.

The thread lift procedure was initially introduced in the late 90s. However, it was not as popular then, because it was still quite invasive and traumatic for the patient. It fell out of favour until the technology with thread lift has advanced significantly in recent years.

While many people are still uncertain about the outcome of the non-surgical thread lift (sometimes known as “suture lift” or “lunchtime face lift”). New technology and the convenience of non-invasive thread lift treatments are the reasons why the non-invasive thread lift procedure is gaining popularity as an alternative to face lift surgery.

Although not as radical as a surgical face lift, a non-invasive thread lift can lift sagging skin visibly, granting a more defined contour, better jawline definition, thus making the patient look less tired with less downtime and at a lower cost.

A non-surgical thread lift is a minimally invasive treatment done with local anesthesia. Using non-permeant absorbable sutures made from biodegradable material, the doctor uses these threads to lift and contour the face. Small cones are present along the threads to anchor the sagging tissues under the skin.

Each thread is inserted under the skin at precise points using a fine needle. The aim is to reposition the sagging fat under the skin back towards its original youthful position.

At the same time, the cones and threads stimulate collagen production in the treated areas over the next few months after the treatment, and this collagen is still present even 2 years after the procedure, often making the cosmetic result lasting close to 2 years or more.

It is perhaps better to consider non-surgical thread lift as a preliminary rejuvenative procedure as an anti-aging treatment, rather than a surgical alternative.

There are many types of threads on the market. It is important that threads firstly need to have been legally approved by the Australian government.

The design and material of the threads are important as they need to give the best “grab” of the fat under the skin to pull up the sagging skin. The threads also need to stimulate the “right” kind of collagen to make the cosmetic result last.

At the Me Clinic, we use top-of-the-range threads that are superior in design and in material.

Like with any cosmetic procedure, it is important to ensure that the doctor performing the procedure is a qualified medical practitioner and is experienced with the procedure.

Dr Gordon Ku at the Me Clinic performs hundreds of thread lift procedures every year and is one of the nation’s leading experts on non-surgical thread lift often conducting training seminars on thread lifting techniques.

A Thread Lift procedure is performed under a local anesthetic. So there is virtually no pain during the thread insertion procedure.

Each thread mounted on a needle, is inserted under the skin to guide the doctor to push the threads upwards until they are taut and embedded. During the process, the doctor pulls back the sagging skin and soft tissues and anchors them using the small cones that are found along the length of the threads in their new — more youthful — position. The procedure usually takes around 30 minutes.

Visible lifting can be seen immediately after the treatment.   You may notice some swelling or needle marks at the entry points on each side of the face. Although they may remain visible for 1–2 days, most people are able to cover them with makeup.

Depending on your skin quality and healing, your “social downtime” is usually about 1-2 days.

It is not uncommon to experience some bruising and swelling around the entry points. You may feel tender around the entry points but it should be resolved in about a week. Although your face may feel quite tight for a few days, it will gradually become more relaxed and natural over a 2-6 weeks as the threads integrate into the skin.
