Laser Hair Removal is an excellent solution to remove unwanted hair gently and effectively. Since only light is used it is non-invasive and does not cause the irritations typically found with some other hair removal methods. How does Laser Hair Removal work?
Medical-grade lasers are used in laser hair removal. These lasers amplify light and produce an intense and synchronised beam. They operate on the principle of light absorption. It is similar in principle to dark colours that absorb more heat, than lighter colours that reflect the heat. For this reason, laser hair removal can be more effective on darker hair..
Applying this principle to Laser Hair Removal, the laser beam is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair causing the light energy to convert to heat and travel down the hair shaft to the root, where it retards hair growth or eradicates the root of the hair follicles. Laser hair removal is non-invasive, so there is no need for cosmetic injectables. While it is highly effective, results may vary between individuals. Repeated treatments over time can often result in significant hair reduction, but the permanency of results can differ from person to person.
Me Clinic uses leading laser technologies available such as the Cutera hair removal system. As with laser technology, it targets the hair follicles at the root for permanent hair reduction.
Who can benefit from Laser Hair Removal?
Both men and women can enjoy the improvements of Laser Hair Removal. Hair types do somewhat affect the result of Laser Hair Removal. Those with dark hair and fairer skin are the easiest to treat because darker hair absorbs the laser light more readily than lighter colours.,
Laser Hair Removal is perfect for removing unwanted facial hair. This includes ingrown hairs in hard-to-reach places. Laser Hair Removal is a convenient option for those seeking a more permanent solution to hair removal, without the discomfort associated with waxing.
When will you see the results?
Results from laser hair removal vary amongst patients. While some of the hairs that have been treated will not regrow, there are some instances where the regrowth of hair is weaker and thinner. It is recommended that several treatments are performed to ensure that these do not return. The reason for this is that hairs need to be treated in their growing cycle rather than their resting cycle and only 60% are growing at any one time.
What should you do before the treatment to ensure the best results?
Here at Me Clinic, we recommend some dos and don’ts to ensure you enjoy optimal results from your upcoming laser hair removal.
- Do not try removing unwanted hair either by plucking or waxing. This means no using the epilator, tweezers, wax, bleach, or depilatory creams to remove any of the hair to be treated.
- Do shave the night before the treatment. This shortens the hair on the treatment area and ensures there is less irritation during the procedure.
- Do advise the staff at Me Clinic if you are undergoing any treatment or if you are on any medication that can make your skin susceptible to damage from the laser.
- Don’t tan. We advise minimising your sun exposure and not visiting tanning salons. This can make your skin more sensitive to heat. It is important to note, lasers can cause burns, hyperpigmentation and scarring when applied on heat-sensitive skin.
Laser Hair Removal Aftercare
Following your Laser Hair Removal treatment, you may experience some redness or swelling in the treated area. This is a normal reaction to the procedure and it will subside in a day or so. To alleviate the effects of hair removal and any skin concerns, we do offer these aftercare tips:
- Clean the treated area gently at least twice daily.
- Avoid using scented lotions, moisturisers and any body products including perfume for at least 24 hours.
- No hot showers, although a lukewarm bath is welcome.
- Minimise sun exposure, and use sunscreen with 30+ SPF where necessary.
- Allow dead hairs to exfoliate 7-10 days post-treatment.
How many treatments are required?
The course of treatments with laser hair removal does vary between individuals. As with the nature of laser hair removal, the treatments are performed during the hair’s growth phase which means it will usually take between 6 and 8 sessions throughout 4 to 6 weeks between each treatment. In some cases, hair grows as a result of a medical condition that is treatable.
While the time taken is dependent on factors such as skin type and hair location you should be wary of Laser Clinics that promise results in fewer sessions than this. Our experience is that effective results take time but are often worth the wait.
A no-obligation consultation with one of our Clinicians or Aestheticians is essential so your skin can be examined and assessed for its suitability for a Laser Hair Removal treatment plan tailored to your needs including the best laser type for optimal results.
