Breast Liposuction

Many women struggle with the problems associated with excessively large breasts. They create a range of complications. Apart from the obvious discomfort, ill-fitting bras and unending neck pain, back pain, and shoulder pain, other issues include poor posture, inability to stand up straight not to mention, poor confidence levels and low self-esteem. Fortunately, breast liposuction (breast reduction), also known as the scarless breast lift, or reduction mammoplasty, is a proven method aimed at surgically reducing the size of the breasts.

With breast reduction through liposuction, fat is removed from the breasts to achieve the desired cup size, thus alleviating underlying issues and increasing the patient’s comfort. This procedure is not suitable for all women with oversized breasts, however, so read on to learn more about its suitability for you.

Surgical Warning: Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

When is breast reduction by liposuction suitable?

A breast reduction surgery via liposuction procedure may be suitable for you if your breasts are larger due to an accumulation of fatty tissue. Age, pregnancy, lifestyle and fluctuations in weight are also contributing factors to overly large breasts. Good candidates for reconstructive breast liposuction are women who have fatty breasts.

Patients that are suitable for breast reduction can also exhibit overall poor posture and physical discomfort including shoulder pain, neck pain and back pain. Overly large breasts cause deep grooves or indents in the shoulders from the weight placed on bra straps, and can lead to skin irritation and rashes beneath the breast fold. If this is the case for you, get in contact with the Me Clinic today to help realise a more comfortable future.

When it comes to the size of breasts, younger women with overly large breasts tend to have more glandular tissue than fat. In cases where glandular tissue is causing the size rather than fat, then liposuction will not be very effective. A mammogram can determine the amount of fat in your heavy breasts. As well as the reduction of fatty tissue, liposuction can aid in correcting asymmetry in cases of uneven breast sizes.

What happens during a breast liposuction procedure?

Breast reduction via liposuction is a major surgical procedure that requires sedation. General anaesthesia is administered for this surgery. General anaesthetic achieves a sleep-like state with the use of a combination of safe medicines. To aid the surgical process, some surgeons opt to firm up the tissue to be operated on, with tumescent anaesthesia i.e  the delivery of local anaesthesia.

The Plastic Surgeon will then proceed to make small incisions with the use of sutures to specific locations on your breasts either from the side or the breast crease. Depending on the amount of tissue and skin that needs to be removed and whether the areola and nipple need to be repositioned, the incisions placement may vary. From this point, the liposuction technique is used via cannulas to remove excess fat, eliminating excess breast tissue, excess skin, fat and glandular tissue, hence reducing the size of your breasts.

Preparing for your breast liposuction procedure

Being prepared for your breast liposuction procedure will not only set your mind at ease, but it will aid in your recovery times and post-operative care. In preparation for this cosmetic procedure, we recommend the following:

  • Complete a health assessment. As part of your suitability for the operation, providing your medical history as well as highlighting any existing issues will help prepare your surgeon.
  • If you are a smoker, stop smoking before the procedure. Nicotine slows down the recovery process.
  • Consult the surgeon if your medication may impede the procedure.
  • Avoid taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs as they can increase bleeding.
  • Take time off. Schedule an appropriate amount of time off work. Recovery from breast liposuction surgery can take a few weeks so give yourself ample time to recuperate.

What should I know about breast reduction recovery?

Following the liposuction breast reduction surgery, many patients will experience significant swelling and an inabilitiy to complete regular activities for a short period in time. At the Me Clinic we recognise the need to communicate realistic expectations and help our patients understand the recovery process.

Time needed for recovery

The breast reduction surgery is a day surgery that can take 2-3 hours depending on the the size and requirements. It is necessary to seek the help of family and friends during the early recovery period. Someone will need to drive you home after the surgery and look after you as your mobility and movements will be compromised in the short term.

The Me Clinic generally recommends that you take 2-3 weeks off of work after the procedure depending on the type of work, to allow for optimal aftercare and a smooth recovery.

It is crucial to limit physical activity over the 6 week recovery period and avoid all heavy lifting. Usually, patients return to completing normal activities and less strenuous tasks after 2 weeks.

Post-surgery swelling

The swelling and bruising experienced after breast reduction surgery via liposuction will dissipate completely 5-8 weeks following surgery, but will be greatly reduced as early as 2 weeks into recovery.

We recommend the use of a compression garment worn across the treated area to prevent excess fluids from building up and to allow your body to absorb any accumulated fluids. The compression garments should be worn for serveral weeks and help reduce the swelling.

It is important to note a gauze dressing will be placed over the incisions. There will be minimal to unnoticeable scarring thanks to the tiny incision surgical techniques applied.

Post-surgery pain

The healing of the body post-surgery will vary from patient to patient where some experience pain and other discomfort moreso and others minorly. Generally there is considerable discomfort for several days following the procedure which can be reduced by wearing the supplied compression garments.

If discomfort or pain persists when returning to more intense activity, the degree of the activity should be discontinued. We recommend the use of pain medication such as antibiotics and painkillers for pain relief and to also reduce the risk of infection during the recovery period.
