Breast Lift in Melbourne

(also known as a Mastopexy)

How does a Breast Lift work?

A Breast Lift is a cosmetic procedure performed by our Plastic Surgeons that involves lifting and re-shaping the breasts. This procedure aims to remove excess skin around the areola and nipple, and often removes the excess skin from underneath the breast. A breast lift is a very common procedure in women who have experienced changes in breast volume, shape and appearance that can range from many factors including age, weight fluctuations and weightloss, breastfeeding and pregancy.

The aim of a breast lift surgery is to enhance the natural shape of breasts by achieving a more balanced and proportionate appearance in the chest region. This procedure is ideal for correcting ptosis (sagging) in breasts, removing loose skin and repositioning the nipple and areola appropriately.

Surgical Warning: Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Breast Lift Incision Options

During a breast lift procedure, the surgeon will make methodical incisions in key areas of the breasts, then remove the excess skin and tissue. After this, the surgeon will reshape the breast tissue and lift the breasts to an appropriate position on the chest. Following this, the surgeon will use either sutures or staples to close the incision points.

There are different techniques used for a breast lift procedure, which tend to vary based on the amount of correction required. The most common incision options include:

Lollipop Incision

A lollipop incision, also referred to as the vertical breast lift technique or Hall Findlay mastopexy is the most common technique, generally used for moderate breast lifts. This incision encircles the areola and extends down the lower portion of the breast. While there is visible scarring after a lollipop lift, the scar around the areola is usually less conspicuous due to its placement within the darker pigmented area, which can help it blend in better with the surrounding skin. The vertical scar may be more visible intially but often fades significantly within a year post-surgery.

Proper post-operative care, including scar management strategies like silicone sheets, gels, and sun protection, can further reduce scar visibility.

Anchor Incision

An Anchor incision involves 3 incision points that appear like a ships anchor in their formation. Two of the incisions are those of the lollipop technique, and the final incision is horizontal across the lower breast crease. This method is chosen for significant lifts and reshaping. The incision underneath the breast is placed into the natural folds of skin, which helps conceal visible scarring after surgery. This additional horizontal scar is less likely to be visible during normal activities but is more prominent upon closer inspection.

Given its more extensive nature, the Anchor incision results in more scarring compared to the Lollipop incision. As with the Lollipop incision, the scars from an Anchor lift will mature and fade over time.

At the Me Clinic, we establish a diligent care and adherence regime for patient’s post-operative scar treatments which is effective in reducing scarring and achieveing almost unnoticeable results.

During your consultation, our surgeon will identify the right incision for you when assessing how much lift you require, whether nipple and areola repositioning is necessary, and whether other procedures will be performed at the same time.

Breast Lift Surgery Overview

Breast lift surgery, also known as mastopexy, is typically conducted under general anesthesia in accredited medical facilities. The duration of this procedure can range from 1-3 hours, which varies by the extent of the correction to the breasts required and whether other surgical corrections are being made simultaneously. It is common practise that patients combine a breast lift with breast augmentation or breast reduction to achieve the best results for their personal requirements.

The primary objective of a breast lift is to remove redundant and loose skin to elevate the breasts to a more youthful position on the chest, enhancing the overall silhouette. Although the surgery does not alter the base position of the breasts, it significantly improves their contour by removing excess skin for a smoother, rejuvenated appearance.

It is common for a breast lift to be performed as day procedures, allowing patients to return home after a short recovery period. However, some patients may choose or at the discretion of their surgeon, to have an overnight hospital stay for extra rest and medical supervision. This is common where extensive correction of the breasts are needed or multiple procedures such as a breast augmentation & lift or breast reduction & lift is being undertaken simultaneously.

Due to the use of general anesthesia, it is crucial for patients to arrange transportation home and have someone available to assist them during the initial recovery phase.

Combining Breast Lift with Other Surgeries

Combining a breast lift with other breast surgeries, such as augmentation or reduction, is a common practice that can enhance the overall aesthetic results for many patients. This integrated approach allows for a more comprehensive transformation of the breast shape, size, and position, catering to the unique needs and desired outcomes of each individual.

For instance, a breast lift, when combined with augmentation, addresses both the position and volume of the breasts simultaneously. This is particularly beneficial for patients looking to restore or increase breast volume while also correcting sagging or drooping. The augmentation component can be achieved using implants or fat transfer, depending on the patient’s preferences and anatomical considerations.

Conversely, combining a breast lift with reduction can be ideal for individuals experiencing discomfort or aesthetic concerns due to overly large breasts. This approach not only alleviates issues like back pain and posture problems but also lifts and reshapes the breasts for a more proportional and comfortable breast size.

The decision to combine procedures depends on several factors, including the patient’s baseline breast anatomy, the degree of ptosis (sagging), and personal aesthetic goals. In some cases, a breast lift alone may suffice to achieve the desired outcome, especially if the primary concern is repositioning the nipple and areola and removing excess skin without significantly altering the breast size.

Ultimately, a thorough consultation with one of Me Clinic’s highly experienced plastic surgeons is crucial to determine the most appropriate treatment plan. The surgeon will assess the patient’s anatomy, discuss their aesthetic goals, and recommend the best approach to achieve a harmonious, natural-looking result.

Breast Lift Surgery Recovery – What should I expect after surgery?

After your procedure you may feel drowsy from the anaesthetic. It is important to have someone drive you home and stay overnight. On this evening we recommend you rest.

You are provided with an after hours direct number in the event you may have any questions or concerns you wish to speak to us about.

The next day or within a few days you must come back to the Clinic for your first post-operative check. You can also expect a small amount of swelling, which will gradually settle but while you may notice a change in the shape and size of your breasts after the procedure, the final results may take some time to become apparent as your body heals and any swelling subsides. We recommend avoiding strenuous activity for around three weeks, but from six weeks or so you will be able to return to any exercise routines you had before.

Our Surgeons and Nurses will continue to monitor your recovery through a number of post-operative check-ups and are available at any time if you have questions or concerns. While scars often fade over time, the final appearance of your scars can vary greatly between individuals and may be influenced by factors such as your skin type and how your body heals.

If you have any questions or concerns please call the Clinic and speak with your Surgeon, Nurses or one of our staff members.

How Much Does Breast Lift Surgery Cost?

As every patient we see has different requirements, it is difficult to provide standardised pricing as each procedure is tailored for each individual patient’s situation. A no obligation consultation with one of our Surgeons is essential in determining what you require and which procedure would be best suited for you.

Our philosophy is simple. We want you to be fully informed, and we want you to understand all your options and we will provide an initial estimate of the cost. Please note that the final cost may vary depending on individual circumstances and any additional treatments or follow-up care that may be required. Consultation fees may apply.

There is no need for you to obtain a referral from your own doctor to see one of our Surgeons. Generally we are able to book you in to see one of our Surgeons in 7 to 14 days.

Will my insurance cover the costs of my breast lift surgery?

Breast lift surgery is typically considered an elective cosmetic procedure and not covered by most health insurance plans. However, if the surgery is deemed medically necessary — for instance, for reconstructive purposes following a mastectomy or to correct a significant deformity — some insurance policies might provide coverage.

It’s crucial to consult with your insurance provider to understand the specifics of what your policy covers.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Breast lift surgery, like any surgical procedure, carries certain risks and complications that are important to consider before making a decision. While breast lift surgeries are generally safe and successful, being well-informed about potential adverse effects is crucial for setting realistic expectations and making an informed choice.

Common risks associated with breast lift surgery include:

  • Infection: Although rare, infections can occur at the incision sites and might require treatment with antibiotics or additional surgery in severe cases.
  • Bleeding: Some bleeding is expected during any surgery, but excessive bleeding can lead to complications and may necessitate further intervention.
  • Scarring: All surgeries result in some degree of scarring. The extent and visibility of these scars depend on the surgical technique used, individual healing processes, and adherence to post-operative care instructions.
  • Changes in Nipple or Breast Sensation: Some patients may experience temporary or, in rare cases, permanent changes in nipple or breast sensation post-surgery.
  • Asymmetry: There is always a risk that the breasts may not be perfectly symmetrical in size, shape, or position after a breast lift. However, your surgeon will aim to achieve the most balanced result possible.
  • Seroma or Hematoma: These are collections of fluid or blood under the skin, respectively, and may require additional treatment to resolve.
  • Delayed Healing: In some instances, the wounds may take longer than usual to heal, potentially leading to complications such as tissue loss or the need for revision surgery.
  • Unfavorable Scarring: While scarring is a normal outcome of surgery, in some cases, scars may be more prominent or not heal as expected, possibly necessitating further treatment.

It is also possible, though uncommon, for the nipples and areolar regions or breast tissue to experience necrosis (tissue death), which can significantly impact the healing process and the aesthetic outcome.

Before undergoing a breast lift, it is essential to discuss all potential risks and complications with your surgeon. They will provide detailed information tailored to your specific situation and help you understand the measures taken to minimize these risks. Remember, being well-informed and following your surgeon’s pre-and post-operative instructions can significantly contribute to a successful outcome and your overall satisfaction with the surgery.

Scarring can be inevitable with any surgery, including breast lift surgery, but can be minimized with the right approaches:

1. Surgical Technique: Opt for a surgeon skilled in modern techniques like the Hall Findlay mastopexy also known as lollipop incision. This method is known for less scarring compared to the traditional anchor incision pattern due to its vertical scar approach without a large horizontal scar under the breast.

2. Pre-Surgery Care: Boost your healing potential by not smoking, eating healthily, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding sun exposure to the surgical area.

3. Post-Surgery Care: Keep the incision sites clean and dry, limit physical strain, and follow your surgeon’s guidelines for wound care, such as using silicone sheets or gels for scar management.

Remember, scars tend to fade over time, becoming less noticeable, especially with proper care and following your surgeon’s advice closely is the best way to reduce scarring.

Breast lift surgery typically takes 1 to 3 hours to complete, depending on the extent of the lift required and whether it’s combined with other procedures such as breast augmentation or reduction.

Your surgeon will give you a more precise estimate based on your specific case and needs.

Combining surgeries with a breast lift, such as breast augmentation or reduction, depends on your desired outcome and breast anatomy. While a breast lift alone can be very effective and benefical in repositioning and reshaping the breasts, adding augmentation can increase size and fullness, and a reduction can alleviate excess weight and size.

Consult with your surgeon to determine the best approach for achieving your aesthetic goals.

The complete recovery time for breast lift surgery can vary, but most patients can expect to see the final results and feel fully recovered within 3 to 6 months. During this time, swelling will gradually decrease, and incision lines will fade. Your surgeon will monitor your progress and advise when you can return to all normal activities, and provide personalized guidance based on your specific procedure and healing progress.

Generally, recovery from breast lift surgery typically involves 1-2 weeks off work for most patients. Light activities can usually be resumed within a few days, but strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least 4-6 weeks to allow for proper healing.

Insurance coverage for a breast lift surgery often depends on whether the procedure is deemed medically necessary. In cases where the surgery is purely for cosmetic reasons, it’s less likely to be covered. However, if there are underlying medical issues, such as physical discomfort or skin conditions due to excess breast tissue, insurance may cover the procedure. It’s important to consult with your insurance provider and a qualified surgeon to discuss your specific case and understand the coverage criteria.

Some discomfort is expected after breast lift surgery, as it is with most surgical procedures. The level of pain can vary between individuals but is generally manageable with prescribed pain medications. Most patients report that the discomfort decreases significantly within the first few days post-surgery. Your surgeon will provide specific guidelines on how to manage any pain and ensure a more comfortable recovery process.

If you experience intolerable pain or pain that extends beyond the expected recovery period outlined by your surgeon, it’s important to refer to the contact information given to you to get in touch as soon as possible with your surgeon and nurses. Persistent or worsening pain may indicate a complication, such as an infection or issues with healing. Your surgeon can assess your condition, provide appropriate pain management solutions, or address any underlying issues to ensure your recovery is back on track.
