Fat Transfer Procedures to Body & Legs: Surgery Process

At Me Clinic, fat transfer is a surgical procedure performed by a specialist cosmetic surgeon. This cosmetic procedure involves removing a patient’s fat tissue by liposuction and grafting it in the areas of the body that requires augmentation. Fat is naturally occurring and the addition of the patient’s own fat (autologous fat transfer) complements the existing fat in the body. The fat grafting procedure’s transferred fat provides a natural feeling and looking volume or body contour shape change.

The rate of absorption (if any) of the fat grafting procedure cannot be gauged for each patient prior to the cosmetic surgery. In our experience, with some patients, the results of a successful fat transfer and fat grafting cosmetic procedure can last many years and even a lifetime. Patients are also able to combine this procedure with our anti-ageing procedures (like dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections) to increase survival rate of the fat cells and promote blood vessel formation and circulation to the newly deposited fat tissue.

Areas of the Body that Can be Treated

  • Sunken chests to increase volume and size
  • Legs and calves to create shapelier thighs, knees and calves
  • Post-surgery defects to help restore volume naturally
  • Post trauma or post injury to reshape or increase volume
  • Correct atrophic ageing of the hands
  • Female and male genitalia enhancements and reshaping

What should I expect after Fat Transfer to Body & Legs Surgery?

Fat transfer is a cosmetic surgery procedure which involves anaesthesia. Because you may feel drowsy from the anaesthetic it’s important to have someone drive you home and stay overnight. On this evening we recommend you rest. You are provided with an after-hours direct number in the event you may have any questions or concerns you wish to speak to us about.

The next day or within a few days you must come back to the clinic for your first post-operative check. You can expect a small amount of swelling, which will gradually settle but you should be able to see results almost immediately, from the increase in volume to the change in shape.

Our surgeons and nurses will continue to monitor your recovery through a number of post-operative check-ups and are available at any time if you have questions or concerns. If you have any questions or concerns please call the clinic to speak with your surgeon, nurses or one of our staff members.

FAQs

Me Clinic also perform a range of breast surgery procedures which includes breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast lift and several others. The most common breast surgery we perform is breast augmentation with breast implants—technically known as augmentation mammoplasty; commonly termed ‘boob job’ or breast enlargement. Fat grafting, also known as autologous fat transfer breast augmentation, is an emerging new breast reconstruction technique. Compared to a facelift, fat transfer treatments are a less invasive cosmetic procedure which can help minimise the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles. During this treatment, excess fat is aspirated from an area like your buttocks, abdomen or hips. These excess fat cells are then processed before being injected into the facial area to add volume and definition. A centrifuge is used to spin the fat to remove impurities. Because the procedure uses your own fat cells rather than synthetic filler, own fat injections are a good natural, non-allergenic treatment option. Body fat goals and amount of fat transfer varies from person to person. To learn more about fat injections for a smoother complexion, make contact with our team.

While the results of fat transfer treatments can be noticed immediately, some of the injected fat may be absorbed by your body in the first few months following the procedure. For example, results from fat injections into the face can last for years making it a good longer-term treatment option.

While a successful fat transfer procedure may last many years, in some patients some portion of the fat grafted may to be absorbed by the body, which will in turn reduce the volume of the targeted part of the body. It’s not possible to determine the rate of absorption of the fat or otherwise for each patient prior to the procedure. The good news is we always remove extra fat so we can inject more fat into the targeted area if required.

While this may be the case in some instances, for many patients a successful fat transfer and fat graft procedure can last a lifetime if the patient’s body does not absorb the fat grafted.

Fat transfer is a cosmetic procedure that takes unwanted fat from a patient’s own body—by liposuction technique—and then injects into the part of the body requiring augmentation, enhancement or volume. To remove impurities, a centrifuge is used as part of the process to spin the fat before between harvesting and placement of the transferred fat. Liposuction in itself is a surgical procedure which involves anaesthesia, small incisions and a cannula to remove stubborn fat. Fat transfer procedure uses liposuction and fat injections with procedure time varying by patient depending on the number of fat graft donor site areas of the body as well as size and location.
