Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy

Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS) treatment is a method used to treat medium size varicose veins that are hidden beneath the skin.

One aspect of this treatment is its recovery time, which varies among individuals and its suitability to treat advanced varicose veins in both summer and winter.

Best alternative to surgical veins, Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS) uses foam sclerotherapy, a method that requires less solution. The foam is visible under ultrasound, which allows for monitoring during the procedure. The level of discomfort and healing time can vary among individuals

Surgical Warning: Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

How does Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS) work?

This treatment involves the insertion of a Fibre-optic probe into the offending vein. The ultrasound machine helps to visualise the hidden vein and inject a sclerosant foam solution along its length causing the varicose vein to collapse. One method involves using foam rather than liquid as a sclerosant. Foam adheres to the wall of the vessel, which can aid in visualising the treated area and placing the sclerosant.

4. Post-procedure

You may need to attend a post-procedure check-up. We will also be available for you to contact us if you need to discuss any concerns or have any questions.

What should I expect after the Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS)?

You are provided with an after hours direct number in the event you may have any questions or concerns you wish to speak to us about.

Some bruising can be expected. Some patients bruise more easily than others. Arnica ointment, which can be obtained from us or any health food store, may be used as part of your aftercare. Some veins could turn dark soon after treatment and temporarily look worse before they look better.

You may experience tenderness and redness along sections of the injected veins after the treatment. This is not an infection. Walking rather than sitting down may help manage the soreness, but individual experiences can vary.

Sometimes an oral anti-inflammatory agent is required for quicker relief. Please contact the Clinic if further advice is needed. Some lumps may form along sections of the injected veins. Please don’t be concerned as this is quite normal. The Doctor may treat them when you return for your next visit or subsequent visits.

Blisters can sometimes appear over the skin. A dry dressing with a Melolin pad held on with Micropore tapes and changed daily is usually all that is required. Generalised rash or itching particularly of the palms of the hands or soles of the feet most often means an allergic reaction. If this occurs please contact the Clinic.

We suggest that you may consider walking up to 30 minutes daily whilst attending the Clinic for treatment, but individual experiences can vary. Please consult with your doctor about your activities during recovery. We suggest that vigorous exercise (e.g. aerobics, running) may need to be limited during recovery, but individual experiences can vary. Please consult with your doctor about your exercise routine during recovery. Don’t plan any long car or plane trip, a week after treatment.

Following treatment your legs may need to be taped or bandaged and thereafter you should wear your stockings where advised by the doctor, whenever standing. The stockings may be removed when lying in bed or temporarily when showering, i.e. on during the day, off, at night. They may need to be worn for a number of weeks after treatment. The doctor will advise you.
