(Laser in an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.)
Many patients are not happy with shaving, tweezing, or waxing unwanted facial hair and tire quickly of weekly and monthly maintenance. For these patients Laser Hair Removal is a viable alternative.
At the Me Clinic we have over 35 years of Cosmetic Medicine experience and 20 years experience with Laser treatments. We use the latest generation Lasers and other Light devices that can treat patients with darker complexions as well as people with lighter hair colours which the older and inferior Laser machines could not treat.
With our advanced Laser technology the treatment of unwanted hair is effective and gentle. We can choose from a number of our Lasers to ensure the correct Laser Treatment is performed for you.
How does Laser Hair Removal work?
The Laser amplifies light to produce a strong, synchronised beam that has a number of medical uses. In Laser Hair Removal this is used to gently heat the individual hair which in turn heats the hair follicle that the hair shaft is anchored to. Since the hair is darker than the surrounding skin it absorbs more light which is converted to heat and is transferred down to the root of the hair and eradicates the hair bulb and inhibits further growth of the hair. After a few treatments the hair does not regrow or re-grows much weaker.
Who can benefit from Laser Hair Removal?
Both women and men can enjoy the benefits of Laser Hair Removal. Patients with darker hair and fairer skin are the easiest to treat, due to the fact that darker hair absorbs the laser light more readily than lighter colours. However, our latest generation laser technology means that people with lighter hair or darker skin can also achieve excellent results.
What should you do before the treatment to ensure the best results?
You are advised not to use an epilator, tweezers, wax, bleach, or depilatory creams to remove any of the hair to be treated. Generally there is less irritation to the skin if you shave the night before a treatment.
For removal of facial hair please make sure you do not wear makeup (or make sure you wash this off prior to treatment).
If you are undergoing treatment with Roaccutane or Gold Therapy or have undertaken this in the last 6 months it is important that you let us know as these medications can make your skin susceptible to damage from the laser.
What should you expect after Laser Hair Removal?
Following Laser Hair Removal some redness in the treated area is considered normal, but will subside in a day or so. To help minimise the effects we recommend that you:
- Gently cleanse twice daily with a soothing unscented moisturising cream
- Only use lukewarm water in the shower
- Avoid vigorous scrubbing of the skin
- Avoid chlorine and other swimming pool chemicals
- Try to minimise activities that cause perspiration or heat the skin
- Avoid scented body products and perfume
- Minimise sun exposure; use UVA/UVB sunscreen if outdoors
- Refrain from shaving
- Conventional makeup can be absorbed into the skin while our products are designed to remain on the skin during this vulnerable phase.
How many treatments are required?
Because the Laser treats hairs in the hair’s growing phase, it usually takes between 6 and 8 sessions with approximately 4 weeks to 6 weeks in between each treatment.Sometimes the hair could be growing due to a medical condition and we can also treat and assist with this problem.
While the time taken is dependent on factors such as skin type and hair location you should be wary of Laser Clinics that promise results in fewer sessions than this. Our experience is that the best results take time but are much more effective.
A no obligation consultation with one of our Clinicians or Aestheticians at the Me Clinic is essential so your skin can be examined and assessed for its suitability for Laser Facial Hair Removal and which Laser or Light Device type would work best.
