How does an Erbium Laser resurfacing work?

The Erbium Laser resurfacing is a highly specialized method of removing old skin cell layers for effective skin rejuvenation like no other. Compared to other laser skin-resurfacing methods, the Erbium laser uses a set laser wavelength, with more focus on specific areas hence producing less heating and burning of surrounding tissue. It stimulates the production of the body’s own collagen to create tighter and smoother skin.

Along with minimal burning of the surrounding tissue, there are also fewer side effects to this laser resurfacing treatment. The Erbium laser is hailed as the age-defying method for many skin types and is highly effective in the removal of age spots, pigmentation, and treatment of damaged skin while stimulating the production of new collagen in the dermis.

How to prepare for a skin resurfacing treatment

To prepare for an Erbium laser treatment, we highly recommend a number of dos and don’t prior to the treatment to ensure optimal results and a smoother recovery time.

  • Avoid heavy sun exposure, this includes sun tanning and long days at the beach.
  • Do wear sunscreen, minimum SPF45.
  • Do not opt for deep facial treatments at least four weeks before your skin resurfacing treatment. This includes chemical peels, facial peels and microdermabrasion.
  • Do conduct a full face skincare regime before the treatment so you arrive with clean skin.
  • Don’t smoke for at least 2 weeks before the treatment and do not take any medication like ibuprofen.
  • Do seek guidance. Speak to one of our qualified doctors and consultants on the use of topical treatments like Retin-A, glycolic acid and Vitamin C.

What should you expect after the Laser Cosmetic Surgery procedure?

After the procedure, individuals may experience varying levels of discomfort or drowsiness due to the local anaesthetic. Recovery experiences can differ. It is important that someone drive you home and stay the night.

You will be provided with an after-hours direct number in the event you may have any questions or concerns you wish to speak to us about. You will be asked to return to the clinic for your first post-operative check within a day or so.

After the Erbium laser treatment, you may experience some minor discomfort and possibly some redness and swelling which may last 2 to 4 days. The use of cold compress and ice packs will help alleviate both of these symptoms. It is also important to keep your head elevated with the use of extra pillows as you sleep. You will also be given some medication to take to prevent swelling and infection. Recovery time can vary greatly depending on individual circumstances and the intensity of the treatment.

Our team of highly qualified surgeons and nurses will continue to monitor your recovery through a number of post-operative check-ups and are available at any time if you have questions or concerns.

Risks & side effects

Like all cosmetic procedures, Erbium Laser Cosmetic Surgery carries potential risks and side effects that should be carefully considered. There have been instances of patients experiencing cold sores after an Erbium Laser treatment. We also advise special care be taken for people who smoke as nicotine does prevent and slow down the recovery time.

Other mild complications include acne scars, contact dermatitis or infection, and post-treatment hyperpigmentation. In the event of this happening, seek medical help immediately.
