Keloid Scars
Keloids are red to purple wound scars which develop when the skin cannot switch off the healing process and collagen is continuously produced causing an over growth of collagen leaving a Keloid Scar. Keloid Scars sit raised above the normal skin level and often don’t improve with time. In some cases surgical revision of Keloid Scars can make them worse.
It is not known why keloids appear in some people and not others. While most people never form keloids, others develop them after minor injuries, even insect bites or pimples. Keloids may form on any part of the body, although the upper chest and shoulders are especially prone to them. Keloid scars are usually just a cosmetic problem but occasionally may be uncomfortable or itchy, and may be much larger than the original wound. They can arise soon after the injury, or develop months’ later.
It is difficult to treat Keloid Scars and with any treatment and the chance of the scar reappearing or worsening is high.
Hypertrophic Scarring
Scar formation can be a normal part of the healing process. In some cases scar tissue formation can be excessive. The two types of excessive scar tissue formation are known as keloid and hypertrophic scarring. Hypertrophic scarring tends to over grow the boundary of the initial injury. They can also be treated with laser, cortisone injections and also surgical revision.
Red scars
Most scars will be red during the healing phase and in most cases this will fade spontaneously. Persistent redness in scars may respond to Laser Treatments.
Brown scars
Some people have a tendency to develop brown pigmentation in areas of damaged skin. Treatment with a laser may help fade the pigmentation. Treatment with a prescription “fading” cream may also help.
