Benefits of blepharoplasty surgery

Upper blepharoplasty or lower eyelid blepharoplasty are facial surgical procedures that can improve the look of tired eyes by removing excess skin, fat and muscle. The procedures offer significant improvements in appearance and can also improve the field of vision. Benefits of blepharoplasty include:

  • Look more youthful
  • Appear less tired
  • Improve confidence
  • Diminish wrinkles caused by squinting
  • Correct visual impairments
  • Improve natural facial expressions
  • Correcting asymmetry

What you need to know before you have blepharoplasty surgery

Before scheduling blepharoplasty, you should make an appointment with a Me Clinic specialist to discuss your treatment options and expected outcomes. The discussion will include:

Your medical history –This includes previous surgeries and any conditions you may have such as dry eyes, glaucoma and allergies.

Your goals – Set the stage for a good outcome by discussing your blepharoplasty goals and expected surgical outcomes.

Before eyelid surgery, you may be requested to take some tests and some photos.

Complete eye exam – This can include testing tear production and measuring your eyelids.

Visual field testing – This will determine if there are blind spots in the corners of your eyes.

Eyelid photography – Photos from different angles to help plan the surgery.

Blepharoplasty is usually done in an outpatient setting.

What you need to know about blepharoplasty post-surgery

After eyelid surgery at a Me Clinic, you will spend a little time in a recovery room. You can leave later that day to heal at home. Initially, you may experience:

  • Blurred vision caused by the lubricating ointment
  • Watering eyes
  • Light sensitivity
  • Double vision
  • Puffy, numb eyelids
  • Some swelling or bruising similar to having black eyes
  • Some temporary pain or discomfort

Use ice packs on your eyes for 10 minutes every hour the night after surgery. The following day, use ice packs on your eyes 4 to 5 times throughout the day. Sleep with your head raised higher than your chest for a few days and use eye drops or ointments as prescribed. You can apply a cool compress to reduce swelling and wear dark sunglasses when outdoors for a week or two.

Avoid doing anything strenuous for a week and avoid rubbing your eyes. Avoid smoking and take medication as prescribed by your treating professional. You may need a follow-up visit at Me Clinic to have sutures removed.

Find out if you are a candidate for a blepharoplasty

Eyelid surgery is a common cosmetic surgery procedure. It can be performed in combination with other facial rejuvenation techniques and surgical procedures such as neck lifts and brow lifts. Blepharoplasty might be an option for:

  • Baggy or droopy upper eyelids (hooding)
  • Excess upper eyelid skin
  • Excess skin on the lower lids
  • Under-eye bags, dark circles, or hollowness under the eyes

What is eyelid lift surgery?

Blepharoplasty (eyelid lift surgery) removes excess skin from the eyelids. As we age, our eyelids can stretch and supporting muscles can weaken. This can cause sagging eyebrows, droopy upper lids and bags under the eyes. Eyelid lift surgery can repair vision problems and make your eyes look and feel younger and more alert.

Blepharoplasty FAQs

Bruising and swelling generally disappear in about 10 to 14 days, although scars from surgical cuts may take months to fade. Make sure to protect your eyelid skin from harsh sun exposure during recovery.

This will depend on the lower or upper eyelid surgery procedures undertaken. At Me Clinic, we aim to provide a highly professional service for the best available price, and we can also help if you qualify for any Medicare rebates.
