What happens in a gynecomastia procedure

The gynecomastia surgery procedure (reduction mammaplasty) reduces the size of breast tissue in men. In some cases, surgeons only use liposuction to remove breast tissue. With this method, a suction hose is inserted through several small incisions to remove fat.

If you have excess skin or glandular tissue, your Me Clinic surgeon may recommend an excision, where larger incisions are made. You may also have your nipple and areola repositioned during the excision procedure to achieve your desired look.

Your surgeon will recommend the technique that is best for you and everything can be discussed in person during your initial consultation. Before surgery, you will be administered general anaesthesia. You will be asleep throughout the procedure and won’t experience any pain.

How to prepare for Gynecomastia surgery

Before a cosmetic surgery or plastic surgery breast reduction procedure, your surgeon will discuss your options, surgery goals and medical history. You may also be asked by your treating doctor to undertake a complete blood count or other tests to evaluate your health, determine the possible cause of gynecomastia, and ascertain your suitability for the procedure.

You may be asked to stop taking certain medications prior to surgery. If you are a smoker, you should speak to a medical professional about quitting smoking before your procedure. Your Me Clinic specialist will advise you when to stop eating and drinking before surgery, and you will need to wear loose-fitting clothing during your time at the clinic or hospital setting.

What results to expect from gynecomastia surgery

Gynecomastia surgery is commonly an outpatient day surgery procedure. Make sure to arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home after the surgery. Your surgeon will let you know how to take care of your incisions and how to care for yourself during your recovery time at home post-surgery.

Bandages and a supportive compression garment will be used to offer support and reduce swelling around the chest area while you heal. You will also be prescribed pain-relief medications that will also lower the risk of infection and reduce swelling. You may have a thin tube (cannula) placed under your skin to drain blood and fluid during the healing process.

You will probably feel quite sore around the treatment area for a couple of days after gynecomastia surgery. Any discomfort or tenderness should diminish within about a week and you will be able to return to work within approximately two weeks. Avoid lifting or carrying heavy objects and reaching above your head during the healing process.

It will take some time for swelling to decrease and breast tissue to heal, with permanent improvements more noticeable within three to six months. In some cases, additional breast augmentation surgeries will be required to achieve the desired result.

Common causes of gynecomastia

Gynecomastia in newborns: This is caused by estrogen from the mother and is common in baby boys. Baby breast buds usually gradually diminish by 6 months of age but can last longer.

Gynecomastia in preteen boys: Breast buds are quite common during puberty. They usually go away within a year but can last longer.

Gynecomastia in teen boys: This is caused by the hormonal changes experienced during puberty. It usually goes away within 6 months to 2 years.

Gynecomastia in adult males: This can be caused by hormone problems, excess fat, an overactive thyroid, or by alcohol or drug use. Older males may experience male chest growth due to weight loss, and other issues.

Some medications can also cause gynecomastia. Inform your treating professional of any medicines you are taking.
