EVLT is a relatively new and very effective treatment for larger veins such as the Greater Saphenous and Small Saphenous veins.
We were one of the first Clinics in Australia to perform this treatment. The advantage of this treatment is its quick recovery time and its suitability to treat large veins in both summer and winter.
How does Endovenous Laser Treatments (EVLT) work?
It involves the insertion of a Fibre-optic probe into the offending vein. With the Laser light in the probe, the vein is heated along its length causing it to shrink, due to the heat effect on existing collagen in the walls of the vein. The treated vein develops new collagen during the healing process.
The advantage of this treatment is a quick recovery time and it is suitable to treat large veins in both summer and winter. After Endovenous Laser Treatments (EVLT) any remaining surface Varicose and Spider Veins can be treated with Sclerotherapy.
The main advantage of Endovenous Laser Treatments (EVLT) is its effectiveness in treating large veins with a short recovery period and the patient is up and walking immediately compared to the Surgical stripping of veins.
What should I expect after Endovenous Laser Treatments (EVLT)?
You are provided with an after hours direct number in the event you may have any questions or concerns you wish to speak to us about.
Some bruising can be expected. Some patients bruise more easily than others. Apply Arnica ointment (supplied by us or any health food store) to assist with the bruising if any. Some veins could turn dark soon after treatment and temporarily look worse before they look better.
You may experience tenderness and redness along sections of the injected veins after the treatment. This is not an infection. Walking rather than sitting down will reduce the soreness.
Sometimes an oral anti-inflammatory agent is required for quicker relief. Please contact the Clinic if further advice is needed. Some lumps may form along sections of the injected veins. Please don’t be concerned as this is quite normal. The Doctor may treat them when you return for your next visit or subsequent visits.
Blisters can sometimes appear over the skin. A dry dressing with a Melolin pad held on with Micropore tapes and changed daily is usually all that is required. Generalised rash or itching particularly of the palms of the hands or soles of the feet most often means an allergic reaction. If this occurs please contact the Clinic.
We recommend that you should walk up to 30 minutes daily whilst attending the Clinic for treatment is recommended and you should also continue with your normal activities. We advise that vigorous exercise (e.g. aerobics, running) should be avoided in the first 24 hours and also when wearing compression-wrap bandages. If you should go on a long car or plane trip, you must walk for at least 5 minutes every hour during the trip.
Following treatment your legs may need to be taped or bandaged and thereafter you should wear your stockings where advised by the doctor, whenever standing. The stockings may be removed when lying in bed or temporarily when showering, i.e. on during the day, off, at night. They may need to be worn for a number of weeks after treatment. The doctor will advise you.
