What is Male breast surgery?

Gynecomastia can be caused by excess fat or glandular tissue in the breast area. Excess fat is easily removed by Liposuction. In this surgery procedure, a small incision is made for removing excess fat. General anaesthesia maybe required. Excess fat removal and excision of other body tissue can be performed in a combined liposuction procedure in a single surgery to reduce costs.

Signs and symptoms of gynecomastia

Apart from the physical changes, some people experience symptoms of gynecomastia such as:

  • Pain (more prevalent in adolescents)
  • Swollen breast tissue
  • Breast tenderness
  • Nipple and areola sensitivity

Common causes of gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is often caused by a decrease in testosterone levels. A testosterone/estrogen imbalance can be the result of:

  • Hormonal Imbalance in the breast glands
  • Medications used to combat a range of issues
  • Drugs and alcohol, including anabolic steroids and some herbal products
  • Underlying medical conditions that can cause breast enlargement
  • Weight loss

Gynecomastia Surgery Costs

At Me Clinic we are often asked how much Gynecomastia Surgery costs. While various factors can influence the final cost of the procedure, at our Melbourne clinic you can expect Gynecomastia Surgery to cost between $8,000 and $9,500.

The variation in the final cost of the procedure is due to a range of factors including the amount of fatty tissue that needs to be removed, the time required for the procedure and whether the procedure can be performed under local or general anaesthesia.

Needs and requirements can vary significantly from patient to patient, which is why it is important you attend a private consultation with one of our highly skilled and experienced surgeons who will conduct an assessment of your condition.

Gynecomastia surgery costs to consider

The overall cost of Gynecomastia Surgery consists of a range of components. At Me Clinic, the price we quote you at your initial consultation includes all associated surgical treatment costs. Key factors that influence the cost include:

The volume of fat removed – Gynecomastia Surgery is typically performed using the liposuction technique, where fat cells are removed from the chest area using a specially designed cannula and a suction device.

Removal of glandular tissueWhere liposuction alone will not be able to achieve the desired result, the removal of excess breast tissue (glandular tissue) from behind the nipples may also be required. This adds to the complexity of the procedure.

Combined procedures – It’s not uncommon for patients to also combine Gynecomastia Surgery with an additional procedure such as Liposuction or Liposculpture. It can be more cost-effective to combine everything into a single procedure.

Surgeon feeThis is a fee charged by the surgeon for performing the procedure. Surgeon fees are set by the individual doctor performing the surgery and are largely determined by their level of experience and the complexity of the procedure.

Theatre and hospital feesIn some cases, Gynecomastia Surgery can be conducted without requiring hospital admission. In the case where the surgery needs to be performed in a hospital, you will need to pay the relevant theatre fees and hospital fees.

Anaesthetist feesIn some cases, Gynecomastia Surgery can be performed under local anaesthesia, without requiring the services of an Anaesthetist. In the case where a general anaesthetic is required, the services of an Anaesthetist will be required.

Follow-up care – You will be required to attend a post-operative check-up in the first few days following the procedure to monitor your recovery. At Me Clinic, all post-procedure check-ups are included in the price you are quoted at your initial consultation.

Medication and Garments – It is our protocol that patients wear a compression garment following the surgery to aid recovery and achieve optimum results. The cost of the compression garment and medication is included in the procedure fee.

A typical Gynecomastia Surgery journey

There are several important steps involved in a typical liposuction gynecomastia surgery. Liposuction is one of the methods used to treat gynecomastia. Here is what you can expect.

  1. Consultation
During your initial consultation, your surgeon will meet with you to discuss your individual needs, explain the various treatment options and likely results, provide an overview of the treatment process and timeframes, undertake a general medical consult, and provide a quote for treatment.
  1. Medical assessment
If you decide to proceed with the surgery, we will arrange a pre-operative consultation and further medical assessment to ensure you are medically fit to undergo the procedure.
  1. Book your procedure
We will book a time that is suitable for you to undergo the Gynecomastia procedure.
  1. Undergo the procedure
The surgery will be performed in a day hospital with patients able to return home shortly after the procedure.
  1. Post-treatment follow-up
You will be required to attend the clinic the day (or within a few days) after your procedure for your first check-up. The surgeon and the nursing team will also be available to answer any questions or discuss any concerns you may have.

What to expect post-surgery

Initial male breast reduction recovery time usually takes about 1-2 weeks. During this time, you should take it easy and avoid strenuous activities to assist in healing and prevent complications. A compression garment will be worn to help retract the excess skin and prevent fluid accumulation. There will be some swelling and bruising. Any pain can be controlled with prescribed medication.

After one or two weeks, you will be able to return to work, resume some normal activities, and perform light exercises according to your surgeon’s instructions. Final results should be apparent within 6 months post-operation.

Does health insurance cover Gynecomastia surgery?

Cost can be an important factor when choosing where to undergo Gynecomastia Surgery. It’s worth noting that having the procedure performed at an overseas clinic may not provide the same levels of safety and assurance that Me Clinic can offer.

It is highly unlikely that travel insurance will cover any private hospital or public hospital surgical fees for complications experienced while overseas. Your gynecomastia surgery in Australia may be covered by a private health insurance health fund. In some cases, certain surgery and aftercare costs may be covered by a Medicare rebate in Australia.
