Liposuction Melbourne

Liposuction in Melbourne is a common cosmetic surgery procedure that involves the removal of unwanted body fat. Like all surgical procedures, it carries certain risks and should only be performed by aesthetically trained Plastic Surgeons. Liposuction can be used to eliminate stubborn fat deposits from specific areas that remain despite changes to diet and exercise.

Surgical Warning: Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Read more on the Risks of Surgery

At Me Clinic, our practitioners are fully qualified and accredited, with over 35 years of experience in Plastic Surgery and Cosmetic Surgery. We perform our procedures in accredited surgical day hospitals and day theatres.

As a surgical procedure, it involves the use of a thin tube, called a cannula, and suction. Under local or general anaesthetic, the cannula is inserted into an inconspicuous location in the body. It is then attached to a suction device that extracts fat from a localised area. The suctioning technique we use is specific and delicate and does not damage the surrounding tissue. Even though it is a surgical procedure that involves risk, it is one of the safest cosmetic surgery procedures in the world.

This cosmetic procedure aims to help achieve more slender and proportionate body contours, although results can vary from person to person.

Who can get Liposuction?

We perform surgical body contouring on all kinds of people who vary in age, gender, size, and genetic predisposition. They can be both male and female, young, middle-aged and older patients as every patient has different requirements. Even patients who are obese, overweight or of a healthy size can be candidates.

Many patients have characteristics like their parents’ or grandparents’ problem areas or a parent’s genetic tendency for storing midsection fat.

It can help you to eliminate these problem areas and allow you to be more confident, reverse the signs of ageing, achieve a fat loss result to achieve your goal BMI, or fit into clothing better. You may require fat removal on a single area of the body, or desire a more comprehensive body transformation. As we are experts in a variety of modern body fat removal methods, Me Clinic can provide you with a tailored treatment plan. This will ensure you undergo the best combination of procedures to permanently eliminate unwanted fat cells and achieve your ideal shape.

Types of Liposuction procedures

Face

Face Fat Removal: Aside from the neck and chin, other areas of the face can receive treatment such as the cheeks. In many cases, chin, cheek and neck contouring results in a lifting effect to the upper half of your face. However, it may also be combined with a number of other facelift treatments to reduce wrinkles, sagging skin and loss of volume and skin elasticity, to more comprehensively makeover your face.

Before

This patient sought liposuction advice in regards to re-shaping the lower chin area.

After

Liposuction was performed on the area successfully.

Performed By: Dr Ashley Granot (M0001026218) MBBS, FFMACCS (Med), FACP, FACNEM, ABBRM, MA5M Cosmetic Doctor, Melbourne

Chin and neck Fat Removal: Used to address many common facial complaints such as drooping neck fat or a double or triple chin. It can also remove small fat deposits or address a receding chin.

Before

This 31-year-old patient wished to discuss liposuction as an option to alter the look of their lower chin.

After

Liposuction was performed to the area to achieve a re-defined shape and contour to the chin area.

Performed By: Dr Ashley Granot (M0001026218) MBBS, FFMACCS (Med), FACP, FACNEM, ABBRM, MA5M Cosmetic Doctor, Melbourne

Body

Upper arm Fat Removal: Removal of arm fat can address arm ‘flab,’ jiggle or ‘batwings’ and results in slimmer and more toned arms. It typically focuses on fat removal from the posterior flap. It may be accompanied by a scarless arm lift or brachioplasty. Arm liposuction can benefit both men and women and remove the disproportionate and bulky look in the arms

Abdomen and waist Fat Removal: Reduces the appearance of excess abdominal fat on your sides, flanks, lower or upper stomach area. Also known as stomach liposuction, this body contouring procedure can address common stomach complaints like ‘love handles’ and ‘muffin tops.’ With body sculpting effect, it can make your abdomen flatter or achieve a shapely, hourglass-style shape. While stomach liposuction is less invasive than a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), it is still a surgical procedure that carries certain risks. It is a commonly performed fat removal procedure.

Before

This 26-year-old patient wished to discuss liposuction to the abdomen and hip areas.

After

Liposuction was successfully performed to these areas to achieve an altered contour.

Performed By: Dr Ashley Granot (M0001026218) MBBS, FFMACCS (Med), FACP, FACNEM, ABBRM, MA5M Cosmetic Doctor, Melbourne

Hip Fat Removal: Fat deposits on the outer side of the hips, known as saddlebags, can be removed and the area contoured to smooth your silhouette into a more proportionate or slender shape.

Before

This 23-year-old patient wished to discuss liposuction as an option to alter their body shape.

After

A Liposuction procedure was completed in our Melbourne clinic in two stages, targeting their inner and outer thighs, knees, hips, arms, abdomen, and flanks, mid and upper back.

Performed By: Dr Anthony Kenneth Prochazka (MED0001181976)

Thigh Fat Removal: This surgical procedure can treat various parts of the leg area that people commonly refer to as their thighs. It includes the inner, upper and outer zones of the leg. Inner thighs can be treated to achieve a ‘thigh gap’ and outer thighs to reduce saddle bags.

Before

This 28-year-old patient sought advice in regards to liposuction in their back, hip and thigh areas.

After

Liposuction was performed to the back, upper hips, and inner & outer thighs to produce a shape that better suited their lifestyle.

Performed By: Dr Ashley Granot (M0001026218) MBBS, FFMACCS (Med), FACP, FACNEM, ABBRM, MA5M Cosmetic Doctor, Melbourne

Mons pubis Fat Removal: Can assist in contouring a fat upper pelvic area (FUPA) which is often caused by fatty tissue on the pubic bones. To reduce the appearance of bulging in the pubic region, we can extract this fat and fatty tissue.

Buttocks Fat Removal: The strategic removal of fat in this area can result in a more lifted or perky posterior. You might seek to reduce your buttock’s size or make it appear more rounded, both of which this surgical procedure can help to achieve.

Before

Patient was 20 year old was unhappy with her protruding buttocks and outer thighs.

After

Liposuction was performed to this area to reduce it and produced a more shapely and svelte appearance. Experts at our Melbourne Lipo clinic performed this liposuction procedure.

Performed By: Dr Ashley Granot (M0001026218) MBBS, FFMACCS (Med), FACP, FACNEM, ABBRM, MA5M Cosmetic Doctor, Melbourne

Calves, knees, and ankles: The lower half of the legs may also be treated to address concerns such as a lack of definition between the ankle and calf commonly called ‘cankles,’ or fat knees. Results in more slender and proportionate legs that are subtly tapered.

Chest

Female Chest Fat Removal: Breast liposuction is a cosmetic procedure aimed at reducing breast size by removing excess fat from the breast area, unlike traditional breast reduction surgeries that remove both fat and glandular tissue. A breast reduction can be attained through the use of this procedure which can address general or asymmetry in breast hypertrophy.

Before

A 51-year-old patient wished to explore liposuction procedures as a means of augmenting their body shape to alter areas not responding to exercise and healthy eating.

After

Liposuction was performed to their Abdomen, Upper hips, Upper Arms, Inner and Outer Thighs.

Performed By: Dr Ashley Granot (M0001026218) MBBS, FFMACCS (Med), FACP, FACNEM, ABBRM, MA5M Cosmetic Doctor, Melbourne

Male Chest Fat Removal: Gynecomastia or ‘man boobs’ is a common reason men consider this procedure. Me Clinic offers male surgery breast reductions for men of all ages which removes excess fat via suction. If the cause of gynecomastia is due to glandular tissue, a very small incision will be made below the nipple for excision access to the problematic tissue. This results in a firmer and more sculpted chest.

Before

This 46-year-old patient wished to discuss liposuction as an option to alter the shape of their hip and abdomen areas.

After

Liposuction was used to alter the waist, abdomen and chest to achieve the shape and contour that the patient desired.

Performed By: Dr Ashley Granot (M0001026218) MBBS, FFMACCS (Med), FACP, FACNEM, ABBRM, MA5M Cosmetic Doctor, Melbourne

Liposuction Costs

The overall expense for undergoing liposuction at Me Clinic consists of both non-surgical and surgical components. Non-surgical costs encompass the operating room, medical staff, pre-surgery lab tests, post-surgery garments, and other necessary supplies. Surgical fees, on the other hand, are specific to each area being treated with liposuction.

Factors influencing the overall cost at Me Clinic include:

  • The amount fat to be removed
  • Duration of the procedure
  • Anesthesiologist’s fees
  • Operating room charges
  • Additional costs (e.g. compression garments).

Me Clinic and our highly skilled surgeons have a track record of successful liposuction procedures with optimal results of liposuction. Every surgical procedure is tailored to the individual, and your surgeon. Me Clinic will provide a detailed cost breakdown based on the specific type of liposuction, the hospital facilities used, and the duration of your stay.

During your initial consultation at Me Clinic, a comprehensive quote will be provided, covering the surgeon’s fee, anesthetist’s fee, surgical assistant’s fee, and hospital charges.

To get information tailored to your specific needs, it’s best to book a consultation online or ring Me Clinic directly.

Different Methods

At Me Clinic we generally perform tumescent surgery liposuction, which can be completed in a short period of time. It offers a fast recovery period with minimal discomfort. The technique involves the injection of a tumescent local anaesthesia formulation prior to suction. This tumescent fluid makes the treatment area ‘swell’ allowing the surgeon to more efficiently locate and extract fat deposits.

The tumescent technique is the gold standard in fat removal procedures as it is well tolerated by patients and results in less blood loss and less bruising. This makes for a safer surgery that is less invasive, less time consuming to perform, and a quicker to recovery time.

Our experienced and skilled surgeons also offer a range of other modified modern methods to remove fat, including:

Ultrasound: Allows for a highly precise extraction of fat cells and cellulite using an ultrasound device that ‘melts’ fat cells, breaking the cells’ walls with ultrasonic energy. This is known as vaser liposuction, which allows for more precise targeting of fat deposits that can effectively define muscles.

Laser Lipolysis: Uses laser light to heat and melt fat and contract collagen fibres, targeting loose skin and resulting in tighter skin elasticity and a smoother result. The laser light assists in expediting the fat dissolution.

Power-Assisted: Involves the use of a power cannula to finely and delicately move through the fat that is being aspirated.

Mega: Involves the removal of large amounts of fat and is an extensive type of lipo. Mega Surgery Liposuction can only be used in limited circumstances.

Our cosmetic practitioners will recommend the best treatment for you based on your physique and what you want to achieve. You may get the best result by undergoing this procedure in conjunction with other fat removal treatments that we offer like chin and neck dermal injectables.

Results and Effectiveness

Liposuction is highly effective in its ability to remove unwanted fat from the body.

Its aesthetic impact varies depending on the type of procedure you select, yet its success is measured in centimetres/inches rather than kilograms or pounds. It might mean a decrease in the appearance of fat on your ankles, knees or cheeks. It can also have more discernible results in terms of contour and weight loss if performed in an area such as the abdominals, thighs, or back of the arms. It even results in a younger, more supple facial profile if undergoing treatment in the chin, outer cheeks or neck area.

Once you undergo surgery, the fat removed can be redistributed to other areas in your body. Fat transfer uses your own fat as a filler. It can add volume to the face, legs, hands, male and female genitalia and is longer lasting than synthetically generated fillers. In some patients, the results from liposuction can be long-lasting, but this can vary from person to person.

What is Liposculpture?

Liposculpture is also commonly performed at Me Clinic at the same time. This involves sculpting and shaping the body during the fat cell removal process to avoid asymmetry. It provides a more proportionate, contoured shape and smooth final result.

Can I Get The Procedure?

Although this treatment is suitable for a wide section of the general public, it has some eligibility criteria. The best candidates are those who are already leading an active lifestyle, eating a healthy diet and are of a stable weight.

You cannot undergo the procedure if you are pregnant and it is not recommended for people with coagulation disorders. It may also be unsuitable for those with a history of poor wound healing or weakened immune systems.

At Me Clinic, we assess your health status prior to the procedure.

Procedure: On the Day

Prior to surgery you’ll be advised of any special preparation that you need to undergo. It may include blood tests and other diagnostic tests. To begin the actual procedure, you can expect it to involve your surgeon drawing lines on your skin and areas of the body to identify the treatment area. This assists the surgeon to evenly distribute the anaesthetic.

Then the administration of antibiotics and anaesthetic to the area being contoured will occur. It is deposited at regular intervals underneath the skin. When using tumescent anaesthetic fluid, it will ‘swell’ meaning that the site to undergo removal of fat will become firm and better defined.

A small incision is then made in a discrete skin fold and the sterile cannula is inserted under the skin through this incision into the numbed area. Then, the surgeon skillfully suctions out targeted fat deposits and associated fluids. The tumescent fluid also constricts blood vessels, allowing for far less blood to infiltrate the fat being removed. At the conclusion of the procedure, the cannula is removed and the incision is sutured closed in the treated area. You will then be pressure bandaged, or placed into compression garments. The day surgery can be performed under local or general anaesthetic.

From your initial consultation to aftercare and side effects, our medical team will monitor you through post-op check-ups as part of your recovery process. You can also speak to your surgeon, nurses, or our clinic’s staff members at any stage.

Surgery Aftercare and Recovery Process

Aftercare is important post-surgery to any procedure, even though many of our fat removal treatments involve little downtime.

Immediately after your proceedure, you may feel drowsy from the anaesthetic’s sedation. It is important to have someone drive you home and stay overnight as you rest during this important recovery time. You are provided with an after-hours direct number in the event you may have any questions or concerns that you wish to speak to us about.

As part of the recovery process, the next day or within a few days you will return to the Clinic for your first post-operative check. You can expect a small amount of swelling, which will gradually settle. But you should be able to see results almost immediately, from the increase in volume to the change in shape.

Starting the day after your procedure, we recommend you complete a daily 30-minute walk and you can otherwise continue with your regular activities. If you need to go on a long car or plane trip, you must walk for at least 5 minutes every hour during the trip.

After surgery, you will need to wear a compression garment for 4 weeks (6 weeks for optimum benefit is ideal during the recovery period). We will supply one to you that fits well and is suitable for the type of treatment you have undergone. They are designed to hide under your clothing so others won’t know you’re wearing them. Taping of the treatment areas may be required.

Our medical team will continue to monitor your recovery through a number of post-operative check-ups and are available at any time if you require assistance. If you have any further questions or concerns, please call the Clinic to speak with your surgeon, nurses or our staff members.

Frequently Asked Questions

Depending on the type of procedure performed, you may be awake under a local anaesthetic or asleep with a general anaesthetic (under the care of an anaesthetist). For smaller areas, treatment can be performed under local anaesthesia. Larger areas typically requires the use of sedation with general anaesthesia, to ensure your comfort and best results.

While liposuction is less invasive than some surgical procedures, it is still a surgical procedure that carries certain risks. Most patients are able to return home the same day. While you may experience some initial discomfort and stiffness, this will gradually disappear. Puffiness, tenderness and bruising (if any) of the treated area typically disappear in 1 to 2 weeks. Most patients tolerate the discomfort without the need for pain medication. However, if you feel discomfort for a few days this is usually well managed by simple pain medications.

Like all surgical procedures, liposuction carries certain risks. It is a common cosmetic surgery procedure, but it’s important to discuss these risks with your doctor. Very rarely does complications such as blood clots arise. And modern tumescent liposuction, which we most commonly use at Me Clinic, has been proven as a reliable procedure across a variety of medical studies. Complications resulting from it are very rare and will be discussed prior to your treatment. They are also detailed in our medical disclaimer. Minor side effects that are more common include bruising and swelling. Following your post-procedure care plan will reduce these symptoms.

As we regularly perform aesthetic enhancement and cosmetic medicine, we understand that many people are concerned about visible scarring. Following your recovery period, there will be minimal evidence of the incisions made during surgery. Tissue discolouration may temporarily occur immediately after the procedure. Wearing your prescribed compression items will aid to minimise skin stretching and helps your body to heal more effectively. Over time, scars fade even more.

Due to the skill and experience of our surgeons at Me Clinic, the marks made are very small and barely visible. We will also make strategic incisions so they are hidden in natural skin folds or on areas of your body that are well concealed.

You can return to non-strenuous work within 2 days. However, you should wait at least 10 days before attempting more intense activity. We advise that if any discomfort is experienced with any activity it should be discontinued. Full recovery from swelling and bruising is expected in 1 to 5 months.

Medicare rebates or bulk billing are not typically available for these types of procedures. However, if you require lipo due to reasons such as trauma or a specific medical condition, Medicare rebates may be available.

If you have private health insurance, you should enquire with your insurer to find out if your individual policy provides any coverage for this procedure.
