Sclerotherapy is a treatment option for large veins, which can be performed alone or in conjunction with less invasive outpatient surgery. It is often used for smaller accessory veins to help prevent them from becoming larger bulging varicose veins.

Before
This patient wished to discuss treatment for prominent and painful Varicose Veins.
After
Sclerotherapy treatments were performed to dissolve the Varicose Veins.
A solution (sclerosant) is injected into the vein using tiny micro-needles. This sclerosant solution initiates a process whereby the body closes and then contracts the vein. Veins that are easily visible are injected without the use of ultrasound as a guide.
An updated technology in this technique is to use a sclerosant foam rather than a liquid.
After the treatment, you may experience some bruising and tenderness along the injected veins. This is normal and not a sign of infection. Walking can help reduce the soreness. If you need further advice or relief, please contact the Clinic. It’s normal for some lumps to form along sections of the injected veins, and these can be treated in subsequent visits. If blisters appear over the skin, a dry dressing changed daily is usually all that is required. If you experience a generalised rash or itching, particularly on the palms of your hands or soles of your feet, please contact the Clinic as this could mean an allergic reaction.
We recommend that you walk up to 30 minutes daily while undergoing treatment at the Me Clinic and continue with your normal activities, avoiding vigorous exercise in the first 24 hours and when wearing compression-wrap bandages. If you’re going on a long car or plane trip, try to walk for at least 5 minutes every hour during the trip. After treatment, your legs may need to be taped or bandaged, and you may need to wear stockings when standing, as advised by the doctor. The stockings can be removed when lying in bed or temporarily when showering. They may need to be worn for a number of weeks after treatment, as advised by the doctor.
