Anti wrinkle injections?

Anti Wrinkle Injections.

“Anti Wrinkle injections” is a term we have all become familiar with. Maybe even pondered at some time or another but what is it really all about?

What is an anti wrinkle treatment?

With advancements in medicine we can now reverse the march of time by injecting anti-wrinkle treatments into the wrinkle, frown and affected areas. This acts to relax the muscles, making them unable to move to the degree they normally are able to.  The result is smoother skin,  less prone to wrinkling and furrowing.

How does it work?

Once injected into the face, anti wrinkle injections work by blocking the release of a neurotransmitter known as acetylcholine from nerve cells. Without acetylcholine, the affected nerve is unable to send a signal to the muscle it supplies to contract, resulting in a weakened or paralysed muscle.

These anti-wrinkle solutions, weaken or paralyses facial muscles that pull on areas of your skin that cause wrinkles and therefore allow the skin to flatten out. About two to seven days after the injections, the lines and wrinkles that are normally caused by certain facial expressions start to disappear. Your practitioner will target specific, individual muscles, but the ability to form most facial expressions should not be affected.

Can all wrinkles be treated?

There are two main types of wrinkles that exist on your face, “dynamic” wrinkles and “static” wrinkles.

Dynamic wrinkles are the wrinkles that occur when you move your face and show expression i.e. the wrinkles on your face when you smile. When your face is not in movement dynamic wrinkles disappear and your skin lies smooth.

Static wrinkles however are visible when you face is at rest. These are the lines that are present with or without facial expressions i.e. wrinkles across your forehead when your face is at rest.

Anti wrinkle injections are used to treat Dynamic wrinkles. They work to block  muscle movement  that cause these wrinkles.  Static wrinkles are present even without muscle movement but are creases that were formed from long standing dynamic wrinkles. Anti-wrinkle injections will not have an immediate effect on static wrinkles, but will do so over long term treatment.

Other areas Anti-Wrinkle Injections can treat?

  • Frown lines
  • Forehead lines
  • Furrow lines
  • Crow's feet around eyes
  • Dynamic and static lines and creases
  • Mouth lines and creases
  • Eyebrow Lift
  • Face Slimming (by reducing masseter muscle (chewing muscle) movement)
  • Gummy Smiles
  • Teeth grinding (Bruxism)
  • Hyperhydrosis (underarms, palms, foreheads)
  • Migraines and Headaches

How long does the effect last?

The improvement in the appearance of your wrinkles usually lasts for three to six months, and repeated injections are required to maintain the effect. With continued use, the effects may start to last longer.

Does it hurt? How long will I be out of action?

Anti wrinkle injections can cause slight discomfort when injected, however ice and numbing cream can be administered to reduce this discomfort. There is almost no downtime from an anti wrinkle procedure.

However, it is recommended to avoid strenuous physical activity 24 hours after the procedure, however you will be fully functional to carry out other daily activities.

Are anti wrinkle injections safe?

Anti wrinkle injections are relatively safe when administered by a medical professional who is trained in its use. As with all treatments, there are some side effects associated with its use, but most of these are mild and temporary. Pain, tenderness and bruising may be associated with the injection, and some people have reported a slight headache after treatment. Nausea and a flu-like syndrome are also rarely reported.

There is only a small risk of significant side effects from anti wrinkle injections, such as a drooping eyelid (which usually only lasts a few days, but can last longer).

In properly trained and ethical hands anti-wrinkle injections can reduce wrinkles with very pleasing outcomes.
