Answers to some common questions about liposuction

January 22, 2020

facts about liposuction

With its ability to eliminate stubborn deposits of fat from almost any area of the body, liposuction can make a dramatic improvement to the shape and contour of your physique—but if you’ve never had it before, it’s likely you’ll have a few questions about liposuction.

If you want to know more about this popular cosmetic treatment, here are the answers to some common questions about liposuction.

Can liposuction treat stretch marks or cellulite?

While liposuction can work wonders eliminating fat to produce a slimmer physique, unfortunately it’s not going to treat stretch marks or cellulite.

Stretch marks are essentially skin cracks that appear on the top-most layer of the skin, so removing the underlying fat will have little to no effect on their appearance.

Liposuction is also unlikely to reduce the appearance of cellulite—cellulite occurs when the collagen fibres or connective tissue beneath the skins’ surface become weak or lose elasticity and the surrounding fat begins to push through. While liposuction will reduce the volume of fat underneath the skin, without strengthening the surrounding connective tissue, cellulite will still be present.

Can you gain weight after liposuction?

While weight gain is possible after having liposuction, the results of liposuction are permanent.

The body stops producing new fat cells after puberty, so once fat cells are removed via liposuction, the body can’t replace them. Having said that, any remaining fat cells still have the potential to become larger after liposuction, highlighting the importance of continuing to follow a healthy diet and exercise regime.

Is liposuction performed under anaesthesia?

Yes—liposuction is performed using either local or general anaesthetic.

The decision to use either local or general anaesthetic will largely depend on the treatment area, the volume of fat being removed and the personal preference of the patient.

Where local anaesthetic is used, liposuction can be performed as a day procedure in our clinic without requiring a hospital admission. In this case, the treatment area is completely numbed to ensure the procedure is completely painless for the patient. Adrenaline is also added to reduce blood loss and increase the anaesthetic effect.

When performed under general anaesthetic, the procedure will need to be performed in a hospital with the services of a qualified Anaesthetist. During the procedure, the patient is entirely sedated to ensure treatment is entirely free of any pain or discomfort.

Is liposuction safe?

While any form of surgery will carry some level of risk, liposuction is a safe and popular cosmetic procedure which is performed on thousands of patients around the globe every year without any issues or complications.

In Australia, the medical and cosmetic surgical field is governed by a strict set of regulations which are designed to minimise any risk to the patient and ensure the procedure is performed as safely as possible.

At Me Clinic, we also conduct a range of checks to determine if the treatment will be suitable for a patient before undergoing the procedure.

How long does it take to recover after liposuction?

While most liposuction treatments only require minimal downtime, the recovery following liposuction can vary according to the patient, the treatment method used and the volume of fat removed.

It’s important to allow some down-time to rest and encourage your body to heal immediately following the procedure, however most patients can return to non-strenuous work after a few days. You will need to avoid any form of intense physical activity for at least 10 days.

Most patients can expect to experience some bruising, swelling, numbness and tenderness around the treatment area which generally subsides after 2-3 weeks. Depending on a range of factors, a full recovery can take anywhere from one to five months—wearing compression garments can help to speed up the recovery process.

How much does liposuction cost?

The cost of liposuction will vary according to a range of factors including the treatment method used, the volume of fat being removed and the number of treatment areas liposuction is being performed on.
