How to Get Rid of a Double Chin

A double chin is a common concern for some people. While you may feel helpless to do anything about it, you don’t need to go on feeling unhappy or self-conscious. At Me Clinic, we offer a range of surgical and non-surgical options to address concerns related to a double or triple chin.

Here’s a run-down of the various treatment options to help you decide which one might be right for you.

Non-surgical injections

Most patients prefer non-surgical cosmetic enhancement solutions where available. They offer patients a shorter and easier recovery compared to more invasive surgical procedures.

To treat a double chin, there are two non-invasive injectable treatment options which can be effective:

  • dermal fillers, or
  • fat dissolving injections.

Dermal fillers are a popular option—by injecting fillers into the jawline to add volume, dermal fillers can produce a lifting effect on the neck, which may help address concerns related to a double chin in some patients. Dermal fillers can also be applied to other areas of the face during a single procedure to create a full-face makeover.

The effects of treatment with dermal fillers are temporary and can vary in duration among individuals. If you’re happy with the result, we can develop an ongoing treatment plan to maintain the results long-term.

Another non-surgical option is fat dissolving injections that use deoxycholic acid, which occurs naturally in our bodies and can destroy fat cell membranes, releasing the fat from within the cells. By injecting a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid underneath the chin, we can eliminate offending fat cells to produce a slimmer neck profile. The effects of this treatment can vary individually.

Treatments with deoxycholic acid can be performed in around 15-30 minutes with some patients requiring more than one treatment to achieve the desired result.

Chin and neck liposuction

Chin and neck liposuction is the gold standard method for treating a double chin.

By making some very discreet incisions under the neck and ears, the submental fat which is responsible for creating a double chin can be gently extracted through a suction device to produce a more slender chin and neck line. The effects of chin and neck liposuction can vary among individuals. While our bodies generally do not produce new fat cells after puberty, individual results may vary.

Chin and neck liposuction is a surgical treatment, so you should allow some time for your recovery. Following treatment, some patients may experience discomfort under the chin and around the neck. The duration and intensity of these symptoms can vary among individuals. This is usually easily managed with pain medication. To aid your recovery, you will also need to wear a chin brace at all times for around 2 to 4 weeks, then only at night for another 2 to 4 weeks.

Surgical Warning: Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Neck lift

A neck lift is a procedure that can address concerns related to a double chin and loose skin. The effects of this procedure can vary among individuals. A neck lift is generally best suited to patients with a double chin who have more prominent sagging skin around the neck area.

If we believe you could benefit from a neck lift, we generally offer patients the option between the following treatment options:

  • Suture Neck Lift: Special sutures are attached behind the hairline and used to lift and tighten loose neck skin.
  • Platysmal Plication: Small incisions are made underneath the chin and the underlying muscle is folded and tightened (or plicated) to lift the sagging neck without removing any skin.
  • Traditional Neck Lift: Excess skin is removed from the neck by making an incision around the front and back of the ears, before the underlying neck muscles are tightened (known as Platysmaplasty).

As a surgical treatment, you should expect to experience some symptoms following the procedure. It is common to notice some bruising and swelling in the first couple of weeks. Some patients may experience a sensation of tightness in the neck area following the procedure. The duration of this sensation can vary among individuals. These symptoms will gradually subside over time and your neck area will return to feeling completely normal.
