Liposuction removes unwanted fat from the body. It can be used to eliminate stubborn fat deposits from specific areas that remain despite changes to diet and exercise.
As a surgical procedure, liposuction involves the use of a thin tube, called a cannula and suction. Under local or general anesthetic, the cannula is inserted into an inconspicuous location in the body. It is then attached to a suction device that extracts fat from a localised area. The suctioning technique we use is specialised and delicate and does not damage the surrounding tissue.
The result of this procedure is more slender and proportionate body contours.
We perform liposuction on all kinds of people who vary in age, gender, size, and genetic predisposition. They can be both male and female, young, middle-aged and older patients as every patient has different requirements. Even patients who are obese, overweight or of a healthy size can be candidates.
May patients have characteristics like their parent's or grandparent’s problem areas or a parent’s genetic tendency for storing midsection fat.
Liposuction can help you to eliminate these problem areas and allow you to be more confident, reverse the signs of ageing, achieve a fat loss goal, or to fit into clothing better. You may require liposuction on a single area of the body, or desire a more comprehensive body transformation. As we are specialists in a variety of modern liposuction and fat removal methods, Me Clinic can provide you with a tailored treatment plan.
This will ensure you undergo the best combination of procedures to permanently eliminate unwanted fat cells and achieve your ideal shape.
The attention to subcutaneous fat removal that characterises modern liposuction originated in the 1960s in Europe. Its popularity exponentially rose following its arrival in the United States in the early 1980s. Although today's liposuction is generally associated with cosmetic surgery, it is also used to address lipomas, gland disorders and is used in reconstructive surgery. Today, approximately 1,453,000 liposuctions are performed worldwide each year.
Me Clinic has over 35 years of specialist experience in liposuction. We were one of the first clinics in Australia in 1983 to offer liposuction and fat grafts (lipotransplantation) which transfer unwanted fat to other areas of the body for volume and contour. We have a well-established history as leaders in the field of both surgical and non-surgical cosmetic medicine and operate as a patient-centric, medicine first practice. This commitment to excellence and patient care has contributed to our reputation as a world-class cosmetic surgery and cosmetic medical clinic.
While other cosmetic methods of fat removal may require multiple treatment sessions over several months, once performed on a certain area of your body – liposuction is permanent. The fat cells removed in a liposuction procedure will not return. However, it does not mean that your body loses the ability to store fat in other areas if you do not maintain a healthy regime of exercise and diet.
The body’s creation of new fat cells generally ceases after puberty. So, if weight gain occurs after liposuction, it’s due to the expansion of the remaining fat cells, rather than the formation of new fat ones. Therefore, while liposuction is not a weight loss solution, it is a highly effective contouring procedure.
Face: aside from the neck and chin, other areas of the face can receive liposuction treatment such as the cheeks. In many cases, chin, cheek and neck liposuction results in a lifting effect to the upper half of your face. However, it may also be combined with a number of other facelift treatments to reduce wrinkles, sagging skin and loss of volume to more comprehensively makeover your face.
This young man wanted to eliminate his 'double chin'.
Liposuction was performed to the area to achieve a more defined chin and neckline. This procedure was performed at our Liposuction Melbourne Clinic.
Chin and neck: used to address many common facial complaints such as drooping neck fat or a double or triple chin. It can also remove small fat deposits or address a receding chin.
This 31 year old woman was unhappy with the 'puffy' look under her chin, which aged her prematurely.
Liposuction was performed to the area to achieve a more defined chin and neckline. The patient was extremely pleased with the result. Our Liposuction Melbourne Clinic performed this procedure.
Upper arms: removal of arm fat can address arm ‘flab,’ jiggle or ‘batwings’ and results in slimmer and more toned arms. It typically focuses on fat removal from the posterior flap. It may be accompanied by a scarless arm lift or brachioplasty.
Abdomen and waist: reduces the appearance of excess abdominal fat on your sides, flanks, lower or upper stomach area. Also known as stomach liposuction, treating this area can address common stomach complaints like ‘love handles’ and ‘muffin tops.’ It can make your abdomen flatter or achieve a shapely, hourglass style shape. It is one of the most performed liposuction procedures in the world.
26 year old female was very unhappy with her abdomen and waist.
Liposuction was performed to these areas to achieve a more shapely contour. The patient was very pleased with her new shape. This Liposuction was performed in our Melbourne clinic.
Hips: Fat deposits on the outer side of the hips, known as saddlebags, can be removed and the area contoured to smooth your silhouette into a more proportionate or slender shape.
This 23 year old woman had a problem with her shape.
A Liposuction procedure was completed in our Melbourne clinic. Performed over two stages to her inner and outer thighs, knees, hips, arms, abdomen, and flanks, mid and upper back. A total of nearly 6 litres was removed over 2 procedures.
Thighs: Liposuction can treat various parts of the leg area that people commonly refer to as their thighs. This includes the inner, upper and outer zones of the leg. Inner thighs can be treated to achieve a ‘thigh gap’ and outer thighs to reduce saddle bags.
This young lady in her early twenties complained of difficulty in wearing jeans and fitting clothes 'off the rack'.
Liposuction/Liposculpture was performed in Melbourne focussing on the outer thighs (saddle bags) and inner thighs which resulted in an hour glass shape and easier fitting of her clothes. The patient was ecstatic with the result.
Buttocks: the strategic removal of fat in this area can result in a more lifted or perky posterior. You might seek to reduce your buttock’s size or make it appear more rounded, both of which liposuction can assist to achieve.
Patient was 20 year old was unhappy with her protruding buttocks and outer thighs.
Liposuction was performed to this area to reduce it and produced a more shapely and svelte appearance. The Liposuction Melbourne Clinic performed this liposuction procedure.
Calves, knees, and ankles: the lower half of the legs may also be treated with liposuction to address concerns such as a lack of definition between the ankle and calf commonly called ‘cankles,’ or fat knees. It results in more slender and proportionate legs that are subtly tapered.
Female Chest: a breast reduction can be attained through the use of liposuction which can address general or asymmetrical breast hypertrophy.
This 24 year old women presented with assymetrical and large sagging breasts.
Liposuction to the breast was performed to reduce the size of the breast and make the breasts more symmetrical.
Male Chest: Gynecomastia or ‘man boobs.’ Me Clinic offers male breast reductions for men of all ages which removes excess fat via suction. If the cause of gynecomastia is due to glandular tissue, a very small incision will be made below the nipple for excision access to the problematic tissue. This results in a firmer and more sculpted chest.
This 46 year old man had a pronounced waist (love handles) and chest as well as protruding beer belly. These are common problems with men.
A total of 4 litres of fat was removed from his waist, abdomen and chest to achieve a more pleasant contour. Our Liposuction Melbourne Clinic performed this procedure.
At Me Clinic we generally perform tumescent liposuction, which can be completed in a short period of time. It offers a fast recovery with minimal discomfort. The technique involves the injection of a tumescent local anesthesia formulation prior to suction. This makes the treatment area ‘swell’ allowing the surgeon to more efficiently locate and extract fat deposits.
The tumescent technique is the gold standard in liposuction as it is well tolerated by patients and results in less blood loss and less bruising. This makes for a safer surgery that is less invasive, less time consuming to perform and quicker to recover from.
Our experienced and skilled surgeons also offer a range of other modified modern liposuction methods to remove fat cells, including:
Our cosmetic surgeons will recommend the best liposuction treatment for you based on your physique and what you want to achieve. You may get the best result by undergoing liposuction in conjunction with other fat removal treatments that we offer like chin and neck dermal injectables.
Liposuction is highly effective in its ability to remove unwanted fat from the body.
Its aesthetic impact varies depending on the type of procedure you select, yet its success is measured in centimetres/inches rather than kilograms or pounds. It might mean a decrease in the appearance of fat on your ankles, knees or cheeks. It can also have more discernible results in terms of contour and weight loss if performed in an area such as the abdominals, thighs, or backs of the arms. It even results in a younger, more supple facial profile if undergoing treatment in the chin, outer cheeks or neck area.
Liposculpture is also commonly performed at Me Clinic at the same time as liposuction. This involves sculpting and shaping the body during the fat cell removal process. It provides a more proportionate, contoured shape and smooth final result.
Once you undergo liposuction, the fat removed can be redistributed to other areas in your body. Fat transfer uses your own fat as a filler. It can add volume to the face, legs, hands, male and female genitalia and is longer lasting than synthetically generated fillers. In some patients, it lasts indefinitely!
Although liposuction is suitable for a wide section of the general public, the procedure has some eligibility criteria. The best candidates for liposuction are those who are already leading an active and healthy lifestyle and are of a stable weight.
You cannot undergo liposuction if you are pregnant and it is not recommended for people with coagulation disorders. It may also be unsuitable for those with a history of poor wound healing or weakened immune systems.
At Me Clinic, we assess your health status prior to the procedure.
The Me Clinic has a reputation built around our success stories. We have created a market-leading culture of care and empathy around our patient-first approach. We have an unparalleled patient satisfaction and safety record that we are proud of.
Prior to receiving treatment at our liposuction Melbourne clinic, you’ll be advised of any special preparation that you need to undergo. It may include blood tests and other diagnostic tests. To begin the actual procedure, you can expect it to involve your surgeon drawing lines on your skin which will identify the treatment areas on your body. This assists the surgeon to evenly distribute the anesthetic.
Then the administration of antibiotics and anesthetic to the area being contoured will occur. It is deposited at regular intervals underneath the skin. When using tumescent anesthetic fluid, it will ‘swell’ meaning that the site to undergo fat removal will become firm and better defined.
A small incision is then made in a discrete skin fold and the sterile cannula is inserted under the skin through this incision into the numbed area. Then, the surgeon skilfully suctions out targeted fat deposits and associated fluids. The tumescent fluid also constricts blood vessels, allowing for far less blood to infiltrate the fat being removed. At the conclusion of the procedure, the cannula is removed and the incision is sutured closed. You will then be pressure bandaged, or placed into compression garments.
Liposuction can be performed under local or general anesthetic.
Aftercare is important following any liposuction procedure, even though many of our liposuction treatments involve little downtime.
Immediately after your procedure, you may feel drowsy from the anesthetic. It is important to have someone drive you home and stay overnight as you rest. You are provided with an after-hours direct number in the event you may have any questions or concerns you wish to speak to us about.
The next day or within a few days you will return to the Clinic for your first post-operative check. You can expect a small amount of swelling, which will gradually settle. But you should be able to see results almost immediately, from the increase in volume to the change in shape.
Starting the day after your procedure, we recommend you complete a daily 30-minute walk and you can otherwise continue with your regular activities. If you need to go on a long car or plane trip, you must walk for at least 5 minutes every hour during the trip.
After liposuction, you will need to wear a compression garment for 4 weeks (6 weeks for optimum benefit). We will supply one to you that fits well and is suitable for the type of liposuction you have undergone. They are designed to hide under your clothing so it is difficult for others to know you are wearing them. Taping of the treatment areas may be required.
Our medical team will continue to monitor your recovery through a number of post-operative check-ups and are available at any time if you require assistance. If you have any further questions or concerns, please call the Clinic to speak with your surgeon, nurses or one of our staff members.
Q: Do I have to be asleep during liposuction?
A: Depending on the type of liposuction performed, you may be awake under a local anesthetic or asleep with a general anesthetic for sedation. For smaller areas, liposuction can be performed under local anesthetic. Liposuction on larger areas typically requires the use of sedation, or general anesthetic, to ensure your comfort and best results.
Q: Is liposuction invasive? Does it have side effects?
A: Even though liposuction is a surgical procedure, it is a minimally invasive procedure and you will usually be an outpatient. You may experience some initial discomfort and stiffness, but this will gradually disappear. Puffiness, tenderness and bruising (if any) of the treated area typically disappears in 1 to 2 weeks. Most patients tolerate the discomfort without the need for pain medication. However, if you feel discomfort for a few days this is usually well managed by simple pain medications.
Q: Is liposuction safe?
A: All surgical procedures involve risk. However, liposuction is one of the safest cosmetic surgery procedures in the world. And modern tumescent liposuction, which we most commonly use at Me Clinic, has been proven as an extremely safe procedure across a variety of medical studies. Complications resulting from liposuction are very rare and will be discussed prior to your treatment. They are also detailed in our medical disclaimer. Minor side effects that are more common include bruising and swelling. Following your post-procedure care plan will reduce these symptoms.
Q: Is there any scarring?
A: As we are experts in aesthetic enhancement and cosmetic medicine, we understand that many people are concerned about visible scarring. Following your recovery period, there will be minimal evidence of the incisions made during liposuction. Tissue discolouration may temporarily occur immediately after the procedure. Wearing your prescribed compression garments will aid to minimise skin stretching and helps your body to heal more effectively. Over time, scars fade even more.
Due to the skill and experience of our surgeons at Me Clinic, the marks made by the incisions are very small and barely visible. We will also make strategic incisions so they are hidden in natural skin folds or on areas of your body that are well concealed.
Q: When can I go back to work/play/normal life?
A: You can return to non-strenuous work within 2 days. However, you should wait at least 10 days before attempting more intense activity. We advise that if any discomfort is experienced with any activity it should be discontinued. Full recovery from swelling and bruising is expected in 1 to 5 months.
Q: How much does liposuction cost?
A: The cost of liposuction varies due to the number of areas treated, the complexity and the time taken to perform your procedure. Me Clinic will provide you a customised quote in your initial, obligation-free consultation with one of our surgeons.
Although we cannot offer standardised pricing because each patient’s requirements vary, you can expect the price of liposuction in one area of the body to start from $3000. We can offer packages for multiple treatment areas which means that the likely costs you will incur start from:

Q: Can I claim a fee rebate from Medicare for Liposuction?

With these cases a Mega Liposuction procedure may be more suitable to achieve the results the patients are seeking. Click more to find out how our expert team in our Melbourne or Sydney clinic can help give you a better shape.
