Lower Eyelid Surgery

(also known as a Lower Blepharoplasty)

Bags under our eyes make us look tired and age us prematurely. These unsightly bags under the eyes are generally not caused by fluid but rather by fat pads. There are two of these bags in the upper eyelid and three bags in the lower. If bags under the eyes are your problem then these fat pads may need to be treated either by removal or by placing them deeper below the skin.

Surgical Warning: Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Our clinic has a wealth of experience in performing Lower Blepharoplasty procedures.

How does Lower Eyelid Surgery work?

One method of treating the lower eyelid involves removing the fat pads with an incision from the inside of the eyelid, which may avoid an external scar. However, the outcome can vary depending on individual circumstances. Laser Cosmetic Surgery or Laser Skin Rejuvenation. can also be used on the skin beneath the eye to lighten it and cause the skin to tighten. Excess skin in the lower eyelid can also be removed by excision of the skin but the fine scar immediately below the lower eyelashes may be visible.

Before

46 year old female patient had sagging upper eyelid folds and early lower eye-bag formation.

After

She underwent upper and lower eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) to raise folds, reduce eye-bags, and restore her youthful appearance.

Performed By: Dr Anthony Kenneth Prochazka (MED0001181976)

A Lower Eyelid procedure and an Upper Eyelid procedure can sometimes be undertaken together, depending on individual circumstances and needs.

Before

This 51 year old Asian female patient had absent upper eyelid folds. She had undergone previous surgery by another surgeon using “stitch” method (no incision) which failed.

After

This time she underwent a standard “double eyelid surgery” (Asian blepharoplasty) using open incision method to create double folds without “westernising” the eyes.

What should I expect after Lower Eyelid Surgery?

After your procedure you may feel drowsy from the anaesthetic. It is important to have someone drive you home and stay overnight. On this evening we recommend you rest.

You are provided with an after hours direct number in the event you may have any questions or concerns you wish to speak to us about. The next day or within a few days you must come back to the Clinic for your first post-operative check.

The healing time can vary, but typically, your skin may heal within 2 to 3 weeks. There should be no visible scarring unless we have had to use conventional surgery to remove excess skin on the lower eyelid.

The recovery time can vary, but typically, the area around your eye may be bruised and swollen for between 7 to 14 days. Patients should keep their head upright and place cold, compresses on their eyes periodically. Where a suture is used they are removed after three to five days. You should avoid swimming till healing is complete as this carries with it a risk of infection.

Our Surgeons and Nurses will continue to monitor your recovery through a number of post-operative check-ups and are available at any time if you have questions or concerns.

How Much Does it Cost?

As every patient we see has different requirements, the cost can vary as each procedure is tailored for each individual patient’s situation. A Lower Eye Lid procedure can be cost effective when combined with other procedures such as Laser Cosmetic Surgery or Laser Skin Rejuvenation.

A no obligation consultation with one of Surgeons is essential in determining what you require and which procedure would be best suited for you. Our philosophy is simple. We want you to be fully informed, and we want you to understand all your options and have one accurate price quoted once. Consultation fees may apply.

While you don’t need a referral from your own doctor to see one of our Surgeons, it’s important to remember that the outcome can vary. Generally we are able to book you in to see one of our Surgeons in 7 to 14 days.
