Upper Eyelid Surgery

(also known as an Upper Blepharoplasty)

As we age and the sun damages our skin we develop increasing laxity of the very thin eyelid skin. This causes the skin of the eyelid to sag and lengthen. When the eye is opened this excess skin tends to fold over the top of the upper eyelid forming an unwelcome hooded look on the eyelid that ages our face.

Surgical Warning: Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Our clinic has been operating for over 35 years, during which time we have gained substantial experience in various cosmetic procedures, including Upper Blepharoplasty.

How does Upper Eye Lid Surgery work?

An Upper Eyelid Surgery removes the loose hood of excess skin from the upper eyelid. Removing this skin either with Laser or through conventional surgery can help some patients achieve a more refreshed look, although results can vary between individuals. Once the skin is removed it allows the eye to appear more open and for women it allows them a platform to properly apply makeup.

An Upper Eye Lid procedure and a Lower Eye Lid procedure can be undertaken together if deemed appropriate after a thorough consultation with our medical professionals. The benefit of having both procedures done is that it may improve the aesthetic results and function of the eyes, based on individual circumstances. In addition the recovery time would essentially be the same for both procedures as it would be for just one procedure.

What should I expect after Upper Eyelid Surgery?

After your procedure you may feel drowsy from the anaesthetic. It is important to have someone drive you home and stay overnight. On this evening we recommend you rest. You are provided with an after hours direct number in the event you may have any questions or concerns you wish to speak to us about. The next day or within a few days you must come back to the Clinic for your first post-operative check.

The area around your eye may be bruised and swollen for between 7 to 14 days. Patients should keep their head upright and place cold, compresses on their eyes periodically. Where sutures is used they are removed after 3 to 5 days. You should avoid swimming till healing is complete as this carries with it a risk of infection.

Typically, skin may heal within 2 to 3 weeks, but please note that individual recovery times can vary. If a Laser has been used to remove the excess skin, scarring is typically less visible as it is located in the crease of the eyelid, but individual results may vary.

Our Surgeons and Nurses will continue to monitor your recovery through a number of post-operative check-ups and are available at any time if you have questions or concerns.

How Much Does it Cost?

As every patient we see has different requirements, it is difficult to provide standardised pricing as each procedure is tailored for each individual patient’s situation.

An Upper Eye Lid procedure can be performed in conjunction with other procedures such as Laser Cosmetic Surgery or Laser Skin Rejuvenation, based on individual needs and after a thorough consultation with a medical professional.

A no obligation consultation with one of Surgeons is essential in determining what you require and which procedure would be best suited for you. Our philosophy is simple. We want you to be fully informed, and we want you to understand all your options and have one accurate price quoted once.

Consultation fees may apply.

There is no need for you to obtain a referral from your own doctor to see one of our Surgeons. Generally we are able to book you in to see one of our Surgeons in 7 to 14 days.
