Double Eyelid Surgery

Double eyelid surgery, also known as Asian double eyelid surgery, is a blepharoplasty cosmetic procedure. With this procedure, the surgeon makes a small incision to create an upper eyelid crease, enhancing the aesthetic appearance of the eyes.

Surgical Warning: Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Double eyelid surgery – Me Clinic

Double eyelid surgery is a procedure that creates a crease in the upper eyelid. Your Me Clinic blepharoplasty surgery specialist will work with you to determine the most appropriate procedure for your individual circumstances, keeping in mind that results may vary. This cosmetic surgery procedure is especially popular with people of Asian descent, many of whom don’t have a natural upper eyelid crease.

Double eyelid surgery can also be performed with an epicanthoplasty, which extends the inner corner of the eye toward the nose. However, combining procedures should only be considered after thorough consultation and understanding of the associated risks. Double eyelid surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis at Me Clinic. While some patients may experience little downtime, it’s important to understand that recovery time and potential risks can vary.

Surgical techniques of Asian blepharoplasty

There are several different approaches to Asian blepharoplasty. Your surgeon or qualified clinician at Me Clinic will review the options with you during your initial consultation. Options for incision and non-incision blepharoplasty popular with the Asian population include:

Full Incision

This incisional technique suits patients with excess fat or upper eyelid skin and can provide long-lasting results. An incision is created to remove excess skin and fat in the upper eyelid. However, there will be a visible scar with this suture technique, although it is typically discreet and can be concealed with makeup.

Partial Incision

This technique is common for patients wanting to remove excess fat in the eyelid area. It provides durable and reliable results in comparison to non-incisional methods. A very small incision, usually less than 5mm long, is made along the new eyelid crease, resulting in almost undetectable scarring.

No Incision

This method is ideal for patients without excess fat or skin in their eyelids. There is no incision or resultant scarring, although sutures (stitches) are passed through tiny holes to create a natural double eyelid look.

Procedures similar to upper lid surgery can also be performed on the lower eyelid below the lash line.

Before

This 51 year old Asian female patient had absent upper eyelid folds. She had undergone previous surgery by another surgeon using “stitch” method (no incision) which failed.

After

This time she underwent a standard “double eyelid surgery” (Asian blepharoplasty) using open incision method to create double folds without “westernising” the eyes.

Am I a good candidate for Asian double eyelid surgery?

Although called Asian double eyelid surgery, this procedure can also benefit Caucasian women and men who want to improve the appearance of their facial features. • Your upper eyelid folds inward when you open your eyes.
  • You are unsatisfied with the shape of your eyelid.

  • Correct visual impairments
  • Long-term improvement
  • Minimal scarring and fast recovery time

Find Out More: Understanding Eyelid Variations

Genetics plays a major role in the appearance of double eyelids and monolids. Double eyelid folds have a crease in the top lids and the absence of extra tissue. This creates the appearance of two lids.

Double eyelids – Double eyelids have a visible crease on the top eyelid. When the eyes are open there is little to no epicanthal fold. These eyelids are more common in people of non-Asian descent.

MonolidsSingle eyelids (monolids) have an epicanthal fold that covers the bottom part of the eyelid. This fold extends to the inside corner of the eye, giving it the appearance of a single lid. Monolids or ‘Asian eyes’ are most common in people of East Asian descent.

Hooded eyelids – Hooded eyelids are not monolids but they are top-heavy. This can give the appearance of a single lid. Some people develop hooded eyelids as they get older.

The double eyelid skin procedure

Ageing can lead to changes in the appearance of the eyelids, including sagging. However, it’s important to consider all options and understand the potential risks before deciding on cosmetic surgery. A double eyelid procedure can be performed with local anaesthesia and without sedation. Non-medical blepharoplasties can make the eyes look bigger by removing excess tissue to create the appearance of an eyelid crease.

At Me Clinic, we specialise in various procedures, including those that address changes in the eye area due to aging.Recovery time after this surgery procedure can vary significantly among individuals. While some may start to heal within a week, others may take longer. It’s also important to be aware of potential risks associated with the procedure.
