Varicose Veins are veins that have become enlarged and tortuous (twisted). Varicose veins normally occur on the legs but can occur elsewhere on the body. Varicose Veins are caused by valves (leaflet valves) in the veins that prevent blood from flowing backwards in the veins (retrograde flow or reflux), which have stopped functioning and allow the blood to flow backward causing the veins to enlarge.
Genetics may also be a factor in the cause of Varicose Veins. Varicose Veins occur most commonly in the superficial veins of the legs. When standing these veins experience high pressure which is a common cause of varicose veins. Whilst Varicose Veins are unsightly, they can be also be very painful, particularly when standing.
